Immigration DNA testing: what solicitors and advisers need to know 🧬
New research from @KingsCollegeLon explores how DNA evidence is produced and interpreted in UK immigration cases. AlphaBiolabs was among the expert providers that contributed.
The key message is that the right test matters. When instructing a laboratory for immigration DNA testing, check:
•ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation by UKAS, with a scope covering the relationship being tested
•Where the samples will be analysed
•Experience with complex relationships beyond parent and child
•Collection in line with Home Office standards
•Reports that meet Home Office and HMPO requirements
AlphaBiolabs offers in-house analysis at our DNA laboratory in Warrington, Cheshire, and is one of the few UK labs accredited for third-degree relatives, providing next-day results as standard.
We're also Ministry of Justice approved, a member of ILPA, and work with embassies, immigration centres, and consulates in more than 90 countries.

When there are safeguarding concerns about an unborn baby, paternity questions shouldn't wait until after the birth.
Our non-invasive prenatal paternity (NIPP) test is 100% safe for mother and baby and can be used to establish paternity from as early as 7 weeks into pregnancy.
This provides social workers, local authorities, and family law professionals with the answers they need as soon as possible, meaning:
• Safeguarding plans can be developed before the baby is born
• The father, and potential carers from his family, can be assessed early in the process
• The baby can go straight into the care of a suitable guardian after birth, reducing time in hospital or foster care
• Fewer moves between carers, which is far better for the baby
• Decisions about parental responsibility can be made without undue delay
All we need for a NIPP test is a blood sample from the mother, and cheek swabs from the mother and potential father. Up to 153 DNA markers are analysed for the most conclusive outcome, and results are available in 3 to 5 days, with an Expert Report included at no extra cost.
AlphaBiolabs was also the first UK laboratory to achieve UKAS 17025 accreditation for NIPP testing.
To request a quote for legal NIPP testing, call our New Enquiry team on 0333 600 1300, email [email protected], or use our online quote form https://t.co/ia6OXDm58c.

On Monday (28 Sept), our Director of Genetics, Casey Randall, attended DNA Evidence, Interpretation & Services in Immigration Casework at @KingsCollegeLon, where new research into how DNA evidence is produced, interpreted, and used in UK immigration cases was presented.
As a Ministry of Justice approved provider of accredited immigration DNA testing (including for complex relationship testing), with all analysis performed at our purpose-built laboratory in Warrington, Cheshire, we were pleased to contribute to the research and are proud to be part of the conversation around transparency and best practice.
Casey said, after the session: “What came across clearly is that a DNA test is never just a lab result for these families. It’s an increasingly relevant piece of evidence to obtain, and getting every step right, from sample collection to a clear, well-explained report, can make all the difference to a family being reunited.”
Thank you to King's College London for hosting the event and to everyone who shared their experience and expertise.

What happens when the potential father can’t or won’t provide a DNA sample for a legal paternity test?
He might have passed away, refused to participate, or be impossible to trace. In each case, testing his close relatives can still help establish paternity.
These tests are known as complex relationship tests, and are useful for:
•Kinship care assessments - where paternal grandparents, aunts or uncles are put forward as carers, but the father’s paternity has never been confirmed.
•Immigration cases - where a child’s claim to British citizenship or a passport depends on a British father who has died or cannot be located.
•Child maintenance disputes - where the potential father refuses to engage, but his relatives are willing to take part.
•Inheritance and probate disputes - where a child’s claim to an estate depends on establishing paternity after the father’s death.
The main testing options include:
•Paternal grandparents - this is one of the most reliable ways to determine paternity, after a direct paternity test.
•Paternal aunt or uncle - this must be a full biological sibling of the potential father to give the best chance of a conclusive result.
•The child’s siblings -to establish whether two or more children share the same biological father.
•Y chromosome testing - the Y chromosome is passed down largely unchanged via the paternal line, from father to son. This test can confirm whether a male child shares a Y chromosome with male relatives of the potential father.
With up to 153 DNA markers analysed for court-approved DNA relationship tests, and an expert team that can provide guidance on the best test for your case, AlphaBiolabs can help you get the evidence you need.
