The ocean is essential to life as we know it. It regulates our climate, provides the air we breathe, sustains communities and livelihoods, and supports an extraordinary diversity of marine life. Protecting it is not optional—it is a responsibility we all share. As climate change, pollution, and habitat loss threaten ocean health, innovation, education, and collective action are essential to building a healthier, more sustainable future.

AltaSea is a 35-acre, non-cargo waterfront property at the Port of Los Angeles and will host sailing competitions during LA28. It is helping shape the future of the Blue Economy through three focus areas: regenerative aquaculture, renewable energy, and blue technology, including underwater robotics.

AltaSea is also advancing ocean-focused STEM education and workforce development through two floating classrooms, more than 60 paid internships, and partnerships with 17 community colleges in the region, as well as collaborations with Caltech, USC, and UCLA.

Jenny Krusoe’s 15-year mission and passion are becoming a full reality as AltaSea connects innovation, education, and career pathways to prepare the next generation to lead in ocean science, clean technology, maritime industries, and sustainable economic growth. By investing in ocean solutions today, we can protect marine life, strengthen coastal communities, and preserve the ocean for generations to come.

By LA28, Eric Johnson, President of Jericho Development, has planned for the one-mile West Harbor waterfront promenade to be fully built out with restaurants, entertainment facilities, pickleball, an off-leash dog area, a public dock, a 20-acre park, a Ferris wheel, a 6,200-seat amphitheater, a visitor center, and a new home for the San Pedro Fish Market. Along with many other attractions and permanent amenities, West Harbor will provide a recreational retreat for the neighborhood to enjoy long after the Olympics—and a place where people can connect with and appreciate the ocean we all depend on.
