[WATCH - Marikana Massacre]: “Ma ungaya eMarikana ungalila. We thought that after the massacre, things would change…”

Thumeka Magwangqana, a TEKANO Fellow and social justice advocate, community leader and trauma counsellor, speaks about the aftermath of the Marikana Massacre. She highlights unemployment as one of the biggest challenges in the area and what she and other women are doing to overcome it. “The biggest challenge is unemployment. So, I decided that the women should learn handicrafts so that they could become independent. The government doesn’t care, even if it was responsible for your husband’s death.”

It has been 14 years since the #MarikanaMassacre. The National Prosecuting Authority has still not prosecuted anyone for the 16 August 2012 massacre. The families and surviving mine workers continue to bear the trauma, loss and lack of justice.

[FOOD JUSTICE]: According to Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity (PMBEJD), in August 2026, of the 44 foods tracked in the basket, 19 foods increased in price, and 25 foods decreased in price.

Foods in the basket which increased in price in August include potatoes (7%), beef (5%), butternut (8%), onions (4%), chicken gizzards (3%), beef tripe (2%), fish (3%), peanut butter (2%), and brown bread (2%).

Foods in the basket which decreased in price include tomatoes (-18%), carrots (-8%), cabbage (-6%), green pepper (-6%), apples (-8%), oranges (-17%), maize meal (-4%), samp (-3%), salt (-3%), frozen chicken portions (-2%), curry powder (-3%), stock cubes (-3%), soup (-4%), chicken feet (-2%), spinach (-4%), cremora (-3%), and bananas (-4%).

[SRD Grant]: In October 2024, #PayTheGrants and the Institute of Economic Justice (IEJ) took the government to court over unfair and exclusionary R370 SRD Grant regulations. In January 2025, the Pretoria High Court declared the grant regulations unconstitutional and invalid, and ordered the government to fix the grant.

The government has since appealed the Pretoria High Court's ruling, and tomorrow, the Supreme Court of Appeal will hear the case.

The SRD grant is an important lifeline for millions in Mzansi. Together, we have continued to demand that issues with the SRD grant be fixed, that it be given to all who are excluded, and that it be increased to an amount that matches the Food Poverty Line! National Treasury, the Department of Social Development, and Sassa, have continued to make it difficult for people to access the grant through their unfair rules.

We continue to stand in solidarity with @PayTheGrants, the @IEJ_SA, and @SERI_RightsSA in this important fight to make the SRD grant accessible to all who qualify.

[Grants]: "Last year, National Treasury introduced stricter conditions for SASSA’s budget to ensure grants only go to eligible beneficiaries. In May, we reported on SASSA officials visiting the Bellville office, one of the agency’s busiest, to assess how new electronic systems are working.

Michael Rondganger, an office administrator, told the minister on Thursday that the new biometric verification system, which is being piloted at the Bellville office, was slow. “It affects the client; it affects the service,” he said.

“We are failing them,” said Kenneth Claassen, who has worked at SASSA for many years. “We don’t have the right tools, and we don’t have enough manpower. That is why we can’t give the clients the right service. We are struggling.”"

"As the Supreme Court of Appeal prepares to hear a landmark case on August 25 about eligibility for social assistance, new data from Stats SA’s Income & Expenditure Survey (IES) backs evidence submitted to the high court in Pretoria in 2023.

This showed that there is an extremely high rate of exclusion from the Covid-19 social relief of distress grant (SRD) grant. About 10-million deeply impoverished people are unfairly shut out of the lifeline of R370 a month."

[PETITION]: Anti- feminist, anti-LGBTQ+ groups, funded by international conservative organisations, are working across Africa to stir up hatred and undermine the safety of women, queer people, and diverse families.

And next year, these hate activists are planning to gather in Cape Town for a ‘Pan-African conference’ where they plan to strategise how to further undermine issues like LGBTIQ+ equality, abortion and comprehensive sexuality education.

[Petition]: Thousands of young people have completed the War on Leaks Programme launched in 2015, with the expectation of gaining practical experience and contributing to improving water services in the country.

But now, many of the graduates remain unemployed despite having valuable skills, while communities continue to experience water shortages, leaking infrastructure, and service delivery challenges.

Mzanis has a water crisis, and one of the major causes is leaking pipes. Yet there are thousands of graduates who have been trained to fix these leaks but aren't being employed to do so. War on Leaks graduates are ready to put the skills they have earned to use and are now calling on the government to employ them to help fix the water-leak crisis across the country.

[Marikana Massacre]: Fourteen years later, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has not successfully prosecuted anyone for the events of August 16, 2012.

Nine police officers were charged in cases relating to the events of August 13 and the death of mineworker Modisaotsile van Wyk Sagalala, but all were acquitted.

In March 2021, the Mahikeng High Court acquitted four police officers in connection with Sagalala's death. He was shot and injured at what became known as Scene 2 on August 16 but died in a police van transporting arrested mineworkers.

In September 2024, the High Court acquitted six police officers who had stood trial over the events of August 13, 2012, which resulted in the deaths of three mineworkers and two police officers.

SERI said the failed prosecutions highlighted the consequences of delays in pursuing accountability."

"Nkabinde (31), a mother of two boys aged seven and five, spends her days collecting discarded beverage, beer and energy drink cans before selling them to a nearby scrap metal buy-back centre.

“I turn cans into cash,” she says with a smile.

“As I am unemployed this is how I make a living. The money I earn from collecting and selling cans, I use to buy food like vegetables, bread and 10 kg rice,” she says."

[MARIKANA]: The Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa @SERI_RightsSA and @theforgejhb will host a commemorative event titled "Youth in struggle: 14 years since Marikana, 50 years since 1976".

The event will bring together music and critical reflection on the connections across the 1976 student uprising, the #MarikanaMassacre in 2012, and contemporary student protests that have drawn inspiration from both moments in South Africa's history.
