Movies where Dhanush is fighting for his family never get old, and with Kara, he still proves he got it.

Director VigneshRaja delivers another banger after Por Thozhil. There maybe multiple movies where the hero robs out of necessity, but the way Kara handles that with unwavering intensity and a screenplay that flows smooth, is so good.

Topics like these have the risk of turning preachy, but Vignesh raja keeps you hooked with the screenplay and the film never goes into the preachy territory.

Story Time... Basically, long post...

This is about the first time I heard of @vigneshraja89... And it was way before anything related to Por Thozhil was out.

It was 2022. And I had reached out to actor #SarathBabu for doing an interview to commemorate 30 Years of #Annamalai.

I was at the actor's TNagar residence, and he was a picture of extreme benevolence and kindness. This shone even brighter because there was an AC problem at his residence, and we couldn't reschedule the interview either. It was an extremely sultry day, and the atmosphere wasn't comfortable for an interview.

Understanding our predicament, he went inside and came back, dressed in simple khaki Bermuda shorts and an orange graphic T-shirt to avoid the heat and continue the conversation. Of course, I was sweating like Jordan Peele in that sketch comedy, but he was hardly perturbed by it, and somehow, the warmth in his behaviour acted as a coolant of sorts.

He dished out interesting anecdotes one after another, and he liked that I came prepared to ask him about not just Annamalai, but other things, too...

One such question was why filmmakers didn't cast him in more grey roles, especially after he portrayed a convincing villain in the film Uchakkattam.

Probably buoyed by that observation, he took me aside after the cameras stopped rolling and said, "Avinash... I'm glad you brought this up... I am playing a villain in an upcoming film. It is directed by a debutant named Vignesh Raja, and the film is called Por Thozhil. You must talk to the guy... He is such a smart and intelligent filmmaker. I asked him many questions about my character, and he has given me a role that will stand as an important addition to my filmography. You will all see a new Sarath Babu after that film... You must speak to him... You'd love to pick his mind... He is not like other filmmakers."

That was the most animated I'd seen Sarath Babu in that hour or so. He trusted Vignesh Raja a lot and believed him to be a filmmaker who isn't interested in making run-of-the-mill films.

Somehow, that conversation with Vignesh Raja never happened because of various reasons. And the film slipped from my mind, too... because when Por Thozhil finally hit the screens, it was a year after that interview.

When I watched the FDFS of the film, I still didn't connect the dots, and it wasn't until the interval reveal that I gasped! THIS was the film Sarath Babu had told me, and THIS was the Vignesh Raja he was praising... I was also pretty happy that I was one of the very few in that theatre to know that Sarath Babu is the antagonist, and I was also pretty disgruntled that I was one of the very few in that theatre to know that Sarath Babu is the antagonist.

And yet... Vignesh Raja surprised me with the final act, and, coincidentally, when I saw him in the same theatre watching the film, sitting in the same balcony, I just held his hand tight to congratulate him.

In a couple of days, Vignesh Raja is coming back with his sophomore film, Kara... and this time around, what Sarath Babu told me in confidence is something that #Dhanush said out in the open... "He's a genius..."

I know Por Thozhil has its fair share of critics, and so will #Kara...

But the childlike enthusiasm that came through Sarath Babu's baritone when talking about Por Thozhil and its young debut director is why I'd always be excited for a #VigneshRaja film...
