Someone liked this post from 2022 and it popped back onto my timeline this morning.
The game has a way of reminding us that there are no shortcuts. The four points on Sunday were built over years of practice, quietly, on his own, one kick at a time.
Seán Guiden sticking to the process he worked on for hours and hours by himself. (love the, back in position, next job)
His Dad, Dub great Niall says he thought him all this 😇🤔
🤓 but I can’t remember seeing him at the 141 kicking sessions Seán did over the covid break 😉
Football has entered a remarkable era of performance insight.
Pico Lopes, Shamrock Rovers and Cape Verde.
One World Cup match against Spain.
One player. One game.
More than 500 pieces of information.
The “why” can be supported by numbers.
The “how” belongs to the coaches and players.
The attached graphic compares the standards Armagh established during the championship with their performance in yesterday’s game.
What standards does championship football appear to reward? During Division 1 of the National Football League, I tried to capture some simple, foundational measures for each team. Armagh stood out because of the consistency with which they repeatedly delivered certain (contd)
different.
The statistics can simply provide evidence.
Over time, they help establish standards.
For me, the game demands that teams:
• Protect their own possession.
• Create scoring opportunities.
• Convert those opportunities.
• Put pressure on opposition possession.
Nicky Quaid made an outstanding save, rose slowly to his feet
rather than celebrating or showing emotion, immediately went back into problem-solving mode.
He glanced around at his defenders
paused for a moment as if gathering his thoughts
delivered a few calm words #leadership
Numbers never tell the whole story, but they can sometimes help explain part of it. A look at the four teams through some key process measures from the Provincial Finals.
The numbers suggest there is almost nothing between Cork and Limerick.
But game day writes new statistics.
Looking forward to what promises to be an epic contest.
IT PROMISES TO BE EPIC.
The numbers suggest Cork and Limerick are operating at virtually the same level.
One puckout.
Two shots.
Four percent.
Separated by nothing.
DIFFERENT ROADS. SAME DESTINATION.
16 Teams Remain. One Championship. Everything Still to Play For.
Glance back. Learn. Move on.
The windscreen is bigger than the rear-view mirror for a reason. The road ahead matters most.
Hi Matt @cooper_m
you asked a question on the show this evening that I’ve often wondered about myself.
I grew up in Finglas through the 60s, 70s and 80s and remember strong communities constantly being built around us.
I did a bit of searching afterwards and here’s what I found
Cork look to be becoming more stable in their “battle rhythm” rather than simply better. Scoring is rising, while shooting accuracy remains almost identical. That suggests Cork are creating more chances, sustaining pressure longer and generating cleaner attacking ball.
