They run privately held companies. If they truly believe there are unmanageable and catastrophic safety risks, then pause. You don’t need legislation to pause development.

Pause pushing the technological frontier, pause launching new products, and pause the IPO timelines.

Investigate the risks, build the mechanisms to ensure safe deployment, and cut the shit.

But they won’t.

They won’t because it’s not about safety, it’s about profits and control. They want government intervention, but not for safety—that’s just the convenient Trojan horse. They want it to build a moat around their lucrative wealth and insatiable thirst for power. No thanks!

This was an interesting story to report. Earlier this week, a slate of AI researchers resigned, saying they believe AI will kill all humans by the end of the decade. I spoke to one of those researchers.

That may be the kick in the butt Washington needed to take AI safety seriously. It looks like politicians on the left, right and center are taking notice. Amid a wave of recent incidents, lawmakers are not taking this lightly anymore, people with direct knowledge told me.

This is all underscored by a financial play. Anthropic is IPO-bound, and financial analysts have said time and time again that the doomer language is intended to help the company’s financial position.

However, it begs the question: Why is it acceptable to use language like that, even if that is the case?

On 9/11 something was wrong with NJ Transit and the trains were extremely delayed, so my dad never made it to a meeting he had that morning at the World Trade Center. Sometimes it's good that we have crumbling infrastructure. I got picked up early from kindergarten and we spent the next 24 hours in the living room watching the news on TV the whole time. For the first time in my life at a very young age I learned they don't actually have enough news to fill up the 24-hour news cycle so they play the same chyrons over and over again. Most bizarre and surreal experience of my life, nothing has ever felt like that since. Sometimes I wonder if that's not actually what happened and I'm remembering a vivid dream or something
