36 years ago today on July 26, 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. Today we reflect on this major step in progress for people with disabilities and also recognize there is much more work to be done to ensure the disability community is supported, valued, and afforded the same opportunities as people without disabilities.

Ken Datugan, DRC Deaf Community Advocate, emphasizes that it is up to all of us to protect and strengthen the ADA. The ADA has laid a strong foundation, but it is a starting point, not the finish line. Today, let's commit to working together to guarantee the full inclusion of people with disabilities in all areas of society, not as an afterthought but as a fundamental and expected part of our communities.

The passing of the ADA was a landmark victory thanks to the incredible advocacy led by people with disabilities who demanded access, autonomy, and civil rights. These rights were hard fought for and long overdue. Together, this month and beyond, we remember the ADA is the floor, not the ceiling. We are still here, there is more to be done, and together we can continue the work to ensure people with disabilities are included in all areas of life.
