I’m coming out of Twitter hibernation for this one. It’s a must-read.
Housing IS about distribution and redistribution. When we dodge the truth, dark forces step in and fill the vacuum.

Kasy Chambers from @anglicare_aust says @tanya_plibersek's plan to give police powers to have Centrelink payments stopped for people accused of a serious crime is “completely at odds with the principles of fairness and justice”
Ty @cait__kelly for reporting
Cutting off people’s payments is punishment before conviction.
And more than that, it’s about creating the impression that people living on payments are criminals.
We’re joining with @antipovertycent to call on the govt to withdraw these changes before they hurt people.
Today we learned of a shocking, sneaky amendment to the government's income apportionment bill that involves police in social security decisions.
We are joining with advocates to call on Labor to abandon police powers to stop Centrelink payments without proper judicial process.
“It's time. We did this five years ago this week. Scott Morrison announced that JobSeeker would be doubled.
Governments have shown that it can be done and it's frustrating to see that they continue to pretend this is an us problem, not a them problem.”

The tax cuts in the Budget for low-income earners are a great start!
But they're not huge, only around $20 a fortnight more in the pocket.
For almost $3 billion less, we could have increased Jobseeker by $200 a fortnight!
There's still more to be done. 🙌

We are deeply disappointed that, not only did the Budget contain nothing for people on social security, but the Government has cut 600 jobs from Services Australia. We have just started to see improvements to call and processing wait times, and the job is far from done.
"If the Budget is the measure of what we value as a nation, then this one falls short in matching the ideal of the fair go for the many people across the country who feel left behind."

“With the tax cuts being the centerpiece last night, we're astounded that there are more dollars for everyone in this budget, except people with the least. We didn't get anything to help people on social security. Jobseeker was not increased." @cassandragoldie
People trying to live on these payments have said repeatedly - there is no such thing as a responsible budget that leaves people in poverty.
If we can find billions for tax cuts, we can raise the rate of these payments.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers explains why all Australians will be receiving a tax cut, including millionaires, but there are no increases to JobSeeker and other welfare payments.

There's some pretty good stuff in the Budget, but nothing really for housing.
One of the biggest issues Australians face is going to need more than just tinkering around the edges.
We need real change.

Australia is becoming more unfair and more unequal. Our tax system is driving that inequity.
Our latest report calls for action to make sure everyone pays their fair share.

Instead of making our country fairer, Australia’s tax system is making inequality worse.
Our new report is calling on the government to turn that around.
Here’s how: https://t.co/QXKPnfgEnB
Wealth inequality hasn't happened by accident. Our new report shows that the Government is choosing to boost the people who need it the least.
It's time to turn that around and use the tax system to make our country fairer.
Gambling costs the lives of thousands of Australians and their families. And gambling ads are targeted at people who are most vulnerable – including people who are trying to quit.
It’s time for the Government to protect Australians from these ads and ban them once and for all.
This Aged Care Employee Day Anglicare Australia says #ThanksforCaring to those in our Network and the rest of the aged care sector. Thank you for your hard work today and every other day.
Horrible decision and one that will undermine trust in the NACC.
Failing to hold anyone accountable for this sends the message that institutions exist to protect the powerful, not help people who need it.
Victims and their families must be livid.
It's official - renting in Australia is cooked.
Our Rental Snapshot is out today. Out of 45,000 listings, 3 are affordable for someone on JobSeeker.
0 are affordable for someone on Youth Allowance.
It is a disgrace.

The @anglicare_aust Rental Affordability Snapshot again shows that the rate of welfare payments is a factor is securing any form of housing in this country.
@AlboMP and Labor need to #RaiseTheRate of all payments in #Budget2024 and commit to a plan for #PublicHousing#BTPM
