@ProPublica journalist exploring Michigan and the Midwest. Author: "The Poisoned City: Flint's Water and the American Urban Tragedy." Teacher: @MfaAlma
endlessly maddening how legacy magazines' shitty web site redesigns have caused link rot -- stories either vanished from the site or, in the case of this 2012 SI mag story on Leigh Steinberg by me and Pablo, our bylines are gone and replaced by the generic "SI Staff"!
Can’t emphasize how much your life will improve if you put in even a small amount of effort to host things regularly.
Dont like cooking for dinner parties?
board game night
in person book club
movie night
poker night
whatever it is you do, invite people to join you doing it
New: ProPublica’s Jake Pearson lost $10,000 mimicking the betting patterns of a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company’s “responsible gaming” safeguards. One week in, he was invited to become a VIP — and faced little pushback as he spiraled. https://t.co/yugaVwIgAI
Senator Collins’ office says we “took the word of someone who pled guilty,” but ProPublica conducted its own investigation of the former CEO’s assertions. We have the receipts.
Our reporters independently corroborated much of the account by former Navatek CEO Martin Kao by reviewing a trove of evidence, legal records and interviewing dozens of people. And we reported that anti-corruption agents at the FBI were asking questions about Susan Collins as recently as late 2024. But after the reelection of President Trump, the FBI and DOJ teams handling public corruption probes were dismantled.

As a smalltown newspaperman who could never afford to give 4 reporters the time to take on a project like this (we have 4 full-time reporters, total), let's take a moment to appreciate @propublica's invitation for other outlets to "Steal Our Stories." Will do!
Exclusive: In late 2024, FBI agents were looking at Sen. Susan Collins’ role in a massive illegal bribery scheme alleged by a former federal contractor. Then Trump gutted the FBI and DOJ, leaving no one to carry on the investigation – it’s dead. 🧵
Do you remember the “dust lady”?
After 9/11, her photo was circulated everywhere: a young Black woman in business attire, covered head to toe in white dust.
She was later identified as Marcy Borders, a 28-year-old Bank of America employee who worked in the North Tower. 🧵
Our paper's four-page wraparound section this morning. I found this copy of the paper in our archives (there aren't many of them available, surprisingly), and our art director made a nice choice.
"One of the things that I don't think I'll ever forget: There was very little color because of all the dust from the South Tower. It looked almost like a gray desert."
60 Minutes cameraman Mark LaGanga recalls what it was like reporting from the World Trade Center on 9/11, 25 years ago. https://t.co/B1ArVDXRzy
Thousands of people in both World Trade Center towers are now evacuating by stairs, despite dark, smoky, loud, and chaotic conditions.
Firefighters are coming up the other way.
A friend of mine had a baby a few months after 9-11, and I remember seeing this photo for the first time in the hospital when I went to visit. This was taken in the moments after the attack, when the staff stood at the emergency room door, ready to treat the wounded from the Pentagon.
I don’t know you personally, but as someone who worked for McClatchy at the News and Observer in Raleigh, I don’t think people realize how bad this is. What’s happened to local news is devastating.
When local coverage is gutted, you’re losing people who intimately know your community. The local perspective is lost and the narrative of the community becomes shaped by outsiders who don’t understand the people there or completely ignored altogether.
Disgusted by the McClatchy layoffs and thinking of all the fine journalists who were let go — and the local communities that ultimately suffer. The continued media downward spiral diminishes all citizens and damages our society.
A federal prosecutor in Minnesota planned to file civil rights charges against ICE agent Christian Castro, but in an email we exclusively obtained, he reveals that Trump officials quashed those plans. New from me + @MegMcCloskey

New: Over the “strongest possible” objections of a federal prosecutor handling the case, Trump DOJ officials quashed plans to bring civil rights charges against an ICE agent accused of shooting a Venezuelan immigrant and then lying about it. https://t.co/msUOpDrtWO
Like to tweet this out every so often. I consider this to be the greatest magazine piece ever written — published 74 years ago this month. If you've never read it, you won't forget it afterward.

A Black Hawk helicopter. Elite SWAT teams.
Last September, federal agents descended on a Chicago apartment complex in a massive show of force.
The government claimed “terrorists” had taken over the building. That’s not what we found: https://t.co/31BNNc1SYb
