I wish to extend our warm congratulations to the people of the United States on the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
As a young student at Furman Unversity I remember reading the Federalist Paper and the Declaration of Independence.
”We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Finland's ties to the United States reach back to its founding. Among the signers of the Declaration was John Morton, a Founding Father who is remembered for being of Finnish descent.
The United States and the Federalist Papers have played an important role in laying the foundation for constitutional democracies across the world.
Today as friends and allies our countries work together more closely than ever. Finland looks forward to the next 250 years of friendship and partnership.
Russia increased attacks on Ukrainian civilians again last night and carried out strikes that damaged a UNESCO World Heritage site in Kyiv.
These are war crimes, and Russia will have to answer for them.
In response, today we are adopting additional sanctions targeting Russia's military-industrial complex and its shadow fleet.
Every measure further restricts Russia's room for manoeuvre.

I welcome the announcement of an agreement between the United States and Iran. Congratulations to everyone involved, including Pakistan, Qatar, and the other mediators.
This agreement paves the way for ending the war and opening the Strait of Hormuz, which will have a significant impact on the region and the global economy.
I urge all involved to take advantage of the situation and find a lasting solution to the conflict in accordance with international law.

The threats by President Donald Trump to impose increased customs duties on states refusing to agree with his plan to annex Greenland are unacceptable.
These announcements follow many other agressive actions towards the EU. Therefore, it is now time to move from reliance to deterrence.
Consequently, Renew Europe cannot vote the EU-US Turnberry trade deal.
Furthermore, the EU should be prepared to deploy targeted and proportionate countermeasures. The activation of the EU Anti-Coercion Instrument should be explicitly considered, as it was designed precisely for situations of economic intimidation of this nature.

I see no possibility for EP to green light moving forward with the tariff agreement on Wednesday. Instead, we must prepare to respond to 🇺🇸-tariff attacks, including those targeting Sweden. We cannot rule out either retaliatory tariffs or the “bazooka” if the coercion continues.
