My role as senior Africa correspondent and deputy editor ends today. It’s been an opportunity of a lifetime telling stories from across Africa on some of the biggest platforms globally and in the UK over the last 8 years.
Survivors who have so far recovered from the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola are bringing hope to healthcare workers and other response teams scrambling to bring the outbreak under control. The BBC was at one of the worst affected provinces in DR Congo and filed this report.
In one of the Ebola hotspots, the mining town of Mongbwalu, we witnessed a rare moment of celebration as the second Ebola patient was discharged. His recovery means a lot for the health care workers and the community. Where rumours and mistrust abound, the testimony of survivors helps give hope that the community can bring the outbreak under control. The survivor, Daniel Kitambala, was treated in one of two facilities that had previously been attacked and set on fire. It was then seen as a place people went to die and fueled suspicion. His recovery will hopefully change that narrative.

In Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak, we followed @ifrc safe burial volunteers from an Ebola treatment center to the cemetery. Ebola has hit the community hard and devastated families there. Here’s our report:

Good morning from Bunia the epicenter of the outbreak of Ebola in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo. I’ve been speaking to survivors, patients, bereaved families, local leaders and response teams battling the epidemic. We’re live on Newsday @bbcworldservice with some of their stories today and throughout the week.

Sudan’s footballers achieved something remarkable even before the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco kicked off.
Qualifying amid civil war was a victory itself. For many Sudanese, football is more than a game — it’s hope, unity, and resilience on the pitch.
