The full story of my run-in with an AfD heavy ahead of a decisive election in Saxony-Anhalt with the far-right party clearly ahead.
What I wanted to @SamCoatesSky about – (some shock, a sore arm and determination to show what happened) - is how thin the line of tolerance for media doing a reporting job can be, when a narrative is being played up that “mainstream media” are the enemy .
And that is something German authorities will need to take more seriously than they did here to protect basic reporting freedoms.

There is something decisive to clarify for Reform on why the money spoken about in the C4 doc to purchase the off-books polling never did change hands.
- either someone higher up than the two officials involved refused to go ahead : was that Nigel Farage? Or how did the saga end?
- One of the Jukes/Orr got cold feet and weighed up the risks differently
- Verbatim, mindful of their own legal position/public interest defence was not going to get to the point of money transfer :so we really need to hear from them.

I hit the roads and small towns of Saxony- Anhalt to follow the closing stages of the far-right AfD election campaign – and find out what went wrong.
And I listened to the soaring talk of the main candidate Ulrich Siegmund flanked by the more intimidating presence of his muscle bound minder.

Alternative for Germany is well placed to take power in a German state.

If it happens, it will raise questions about how chancellors such as Angela Merkel and Friedrich Merz failed to stop large parts of the east from veering toward the far right.

Saxony-Anhalt (scene of the AfD’d big breakthrough test at wkd) - is much less religious than other former E German regions – and all lag behind the old W. Germany on churchgoing. Catholicism tiny minority.
So reviving church-based opposition unlikely to be effective overall
