during the first released normal log, namjoon is reading after waking up. I think they’ll release a log of each member doing something “normal”. this is the best idea ever 🥺
Why HOOLIGAN is a GREAT song.
I love analysing music -though I usually don't share my thoughts on it much- so it's long and detailed. You may scroll on.
Hooligan is a lot more than the knives bit.
It's the fact that there are SEVEN DISTINCT SECTIONS in it, and they all mesh together so well that it takes a group like BTS to sew them together so seamlessly.
Section 1: violin arpeggios. Present over most of the song, it gives the song a lightness that would be missed if it was all hard beats & snares and bass. When it stops it's to emphasize the impact of the lyrics.
Section 2: yes, obvious, how most would say the song starts, THE KNIVES together at that precise rhythm and with that specific pitch grating against each other.
They warn you there's something dangerous about to happen and attests to the title of the song.
Section 3: that's when the beat drops and the bass & percussion with clinking sounds shake your chest with the 'Watch This Watch This Beat'.
Here the rappers can do their best at using cadence, voice effects like fry and growl and of course the HAHAHAHA to give it the grit, the intensity and the punch those lyrics need so as to match the beat.
Section 4: here's where it gets genuinely different from anything done by any rapper/hip hop artist. It goes from a rap beat to a r&b/pop beat thanks to the reintroduction of the violin arpeggios.
The vocals are so smooth and the notes are held longer than expected in 'Why this bassline slapping so ruuuuuuuuuuuude' to break the rhythm of the rap verses. It gives the track a lightness and playfulness/coolness in contrast with the rappers' heavy beat and delivery. It's Bangtan's signature 'we can sing too, are you surprised?'.
Section 5: j-hope, SUGA doing their verses at a different speed than WatchThis-WatchThis, different cadence in their rap, double-timing their flow at times, half-timing it at others, as advanced-level rappers like them would feel comfortable doing. All while the beat at the background remains consistent and holds the listener's attention and rhythm.
Section 6: Take You Out. We're taking the song back to R&B but with a different melody (the FOURTH by now in the song). The last phrase is high, with no percussion, taking the words 'Make it Unforgettable' and making them a cliffhanger so the listener's never sure if the song is going back to WatchThisWatchThis or they're going to hear yet ANOTHER melody.
Bridge 1 of the TWO THAT THE SONG HAS.
Honorable mention to 'Crowd Looking like a Campus' while we're going back to the start with nothing but the sound of the knives grating each other.
Using the knives here tricks the listener's mind into thinking that the song is actually starting a second time, making it feel shorter.
Section 7: Namjoon's bridge, the SECOND IN THE SONG. The FIFTH melody too, no violins, no knives, no clinking sounds to ensure his WORDS are heard. Because it's the verse explaining the purpose of the song. The distortion in the bass goes so hard to make it sound like he's on huge speakers delivering a speech to the crowds.
Then the violins come in again to wrap the song up delicately with their ethereal but laser-focus vocal power, their HAHAHAs and the knives scraping going back to the beginning, full circle.
THAT'S why Hooligan is so good, in my opinion. Because so much is happening in the song but it's so seamlessly sewn together it makes you feel it went by in a minute when it's actually 4 and you listened to 2-3 different songs when it's just one.
It only took me minutes to write this, I can't even imagine how long it went into producing the track.
Have a great Saturday, Keep Swimming, here's a playlist with a lot of Hooligan in it:
