Some VAG members stayed on in Ulster for the Historic Farm Buildings Group conference which followed #VAGspringconf2024. A big thank you to Dr Duncan Berryman @ArchaeologistD who did a marvellous job in organising both conferences! @FarmBuildings
The final visit of #VAGspringconf2024 - Cockle Row, Groomsport, a pair of fisherman's cottages built at right angles to the sea for shelter from storms. A huge thank you to Dr Duncan Berryman @ArchaeologistD and his colleagues for organising a brilliant conference!
Exciting to see that our forthcoming Chipping Norton volume is now on the @boydellbrewer website! 😀 And even more exciting to see that from July you can pre-order it online! 😀😀
Day 1 of the @VArchGroup conference in Ulster done. Great the visit @NTCastleWard and Ballydugan Mill. Lots of great discussions about the date of the tower house.
“Caring can be lonely, but CONNECT is an opportunity to take a break from work and caring and to connect with others who have something in common.”

You may be unsurprised to learn that, yes, I have always been a mediaeval buildings nerd. Here I am, aged 13, at White Ladies Priory (Shrops).
If you'd like to hear more about my career in buildings archaeology, I'll be doing an online talk tomorrow:

⛏️ IDEAL HOMES is a selection of studies of domestic objects and lives, demonstrating the commonalities humans share when there is ‘no place like home’, enhancing archaeological knowledge of the realities of life in the past. Order it here👉https://t.co/0gxS762LiQ @justrena
It's bleakly depressing that about 70-80% of being a historian of medieval Scotland is reassuring colleagues & the general public alike that things weren't all just relentlessly shit here.
Communities Minister @gordonlyons1 officially opened a new shared space public archive in Belfast this week, bringing together thousands of years of history and heritage in NI.
HERoNI has co-located with @PRONI_DFC in a purpose built archive centre in the Titanic Quarter.
Tomorrow's online talk will look at the archaeology of staircases. They are not just a way to access different floors in a house but tell us lots about social history and attitudes of the times they were used.
