📉 Architecture’s longest slump just got longer.

The AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index fell to 46.6 in July, extending nearly 3½ years of weak business conditions—the longest downturn in ABI history.

But here’s the revealing part:

Project inquiries: 52.6 📈
Design contracts: 47.2 📉

Clients still want to build. They’re just not signing enough contracts.

Every U.S. region is now below 50. Every major building sector is contracting. And commercial/industrial firms haven’t reported billings growth in four years.

The pipeline hasn’t vanished.

It has become increasingly difficult to turn into actual buildings.

Why should affordable housing feel cheap?

OMA’s first completed 100% affordable housing project in the U.S. turns a former fast-food site beside Golden Gate Park into 160 permanently affordable homes.

But 730 Stanyan is about more than numbers.

OMA and Y.A. studio bring daylight, courtyards, terraces, park views, family-sized apartments and durable materials to housing for low-income and formerly unhoused families and young adults.

In market-rate housing, those qualities are called amenities—and priced accordingly.

Here, they’re treated as part of making a decent home.
