In healthcare, success is not always measured by how many lives are cured. Sometimes, it is measured by how many people are helped to spend their last days with dignity, comfort, and compassionate care.
Bhubaneswar-based Bagchi Karunashraya Palliative Care Centre is one of the very few facilities in India providing free end-of-life cancer care.
In just over a year since its inauguration, it has cared for 1,220 hospice patients, made more than 8,500 home visits, and served 675 patients through its OPD.
A remarkable example of humanity in action 🙏🏼
Sir,
Many citizens have found the reward amount of ₹1,000/- for saving a life surprisingly low. To some extent their reaction is understandable. However, most are not aware of the institutional constraints involved. Since you have also commented on the issue, a bit harshly, I felt it may be useful to provide some additional context.
1. Unlike central forces, budgetary provisions for rewarding State Police personnel on duty are very limited.
2. There are also strict ceilings on the amount that can be sanctioned on a particular occasion. Officers do not have the discretion to approve significantly higher rewards, regardless of the quality of performance.
3. As an officer decorated with many medals you will appreciate that such rewards are not merely monetary. They are entered in the service record and contribute to an officer’s career progression, motivation, and morale. In the instant case, recognition by the Police Commissioner itself carries considerable value.
4. As a former Govt. servant, I am sure you would appreciate the institutional limitations as well as the importance of encouraging personnel who perform well in the field.
Jai Hind !
No, I am not worried about what foreigners think of uncivilised and uncouth behaviour of some of us. What worries me more is that because of such behaviour, visa rules are getting tougher for all Indians. Thailand is recent example.
I just don’t want people in host countries to look at us nervously, wondering which one of us will suddenly start dancing in a supermarket to make a reel.
People whose behaviour abroad brings a bad name to the country should face some consequences. In serious cases, restrictions on foreign travel for some years can also be considered.
Having an Indian passport is not just a right. It also comes with the responsibility to respect local laws, behave properly in public, and protect the country’s image.

Another feather in Bhubaneswar’s cap!!
After being chosen to host the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2028, Bhubaneswar will now also host the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in 2028.
This was announced during the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) meeting in Hong Kong yesterday.
With India’s largest indoor athletics stadium and a world-class sporting ecosystem, Odisha is the sports capital of India.
Yes sir. They asked me some very dumb questions.
While leaving, I asked why such questions. They smiled and said, “In your career, you will meet people who would ask stupid questions. We just wanted to see whether you can handle them calmly.”
Visionaries, you see 😉
Delhi #Gymkhana Club issue is like the Reservation Debate, South Delhi Elite Edition.
Those enjoying the privilege want permanent status quo. Those locked outside are applauding the disruption.
You will rarely find a beneficiary supporting the government move, or
an outsider opposing it.
There have been discussions recently about courts taking U-turns from some of their old decisions. It reminded me of an interesting incident.
An old investigation had reached a dead end after years of effort. My predecessor had proposed closure of the case. The proposal had moved through channels, been agreed to at senior levels, and was awaiting a final decision from headquarters.
HQ later sent the file back asking for some documents. By then, I had just taken charge. My role was only to send the required papers.
But being new to the unit, I read the entire file carefully over several days. Most of the earlier conclusions were reasonable. Yet I felt a few important leads still remained unexplored. While sending the documents, I suggested that these possibilities should first be exhausted before the investigation was closed.
The file then went back to my immediate senior, who had earlier supported the closure proposal.
What happened next left a deep impression on me.
He could easily have defended his earlier view. Most people would have. Instead, in his note, he admitted that some aspects had been missed earlier, appreciated the fresh observations, and supported my opinion.
In government systems, where changing a stand is often seen as weakness, it takes courage to say: “I missed something earlier, and my earlier opinion may not have been entirely correct.”
Every U-turn is not bad. Some U-turns reflect honesty. Some reflect humility. Some show that we humans are prone to mistakes, capable of learning, and willing to improve.

Last year, after losing his father to cancer, this young student from Delhi was going through an extremely difficult phase.
With support from our #PromiseBank depositor @TheSahu, he was able to continue his studies.
Today, he has successfully passed Class 12.
