Why is preventing kidney flares so important in #SLE? Each flare reduces kidney function. This new baseline slowly declines further with age. Patients with repeated flares are more likely to go on to kidney failure.

@lupuscyclopedia Absolutely! And it shows why we have to get patients off the steroid treadmill. It takes care of the flare but in the long run does not improve outcomes. Treat to target with early implementation of biologics is the way to go.

Disease modification in #SLE means 1. 🛑flares 2. ⬇️ steroids and 3. ⬇️ organ damage over time. Steroids temporarily reduce disease activity, but they do not prevent future flares and contribute to damage. Compare to biologic therapies that protect patients over time

🔥 COVID appears to be a trigger for developing an autoimmune disease

We have read many case reports of patients developing a systemic autoimmune disease associated with a COVID infection (eg systemic lupus with lupus nephritis).

This very large study from Korea shows an increased risk for some autoimmune diseases like #SLE, #lupus, #Sjogrens and others. This comes from a data base of close to 10 million people.

This makes sense. Other viral infections, especially Epstein Barr virus, are associated with an increased risk for SLE and related disorders. COVID is known to increase immune system activity (which is the problem with autoimmune diseases).

More research is needed...
