In December of 2017, Ty Abernethy had just returned back to Atlanta after a half decade jaunt in New York City.
We grabbed a drink at what was then Empire State South at 10th and Peachtree. He had dreams of starting and scaling an HR company back in his hometown. Ty is someone you just want to work with and be around: strong character, empathetic leader, and deep thinker.
Shortly after our catch up, he started working out of the @ATLTechVillage in the @AtlantaVentures office. He didn't even want a desk. He just wanted a room to make calls and be around other entrepreneurs also building their dreams.
He locked in as a solo founder for a year: calling potential customers, honing his pitch, and crafting Grayscale's MVP. Simultaneously, he developed a co-founder relationship with Hubert Liu who was also working out of the Atlanta Ventures Studio.
Before we knew it, they were a duo ready to scale.
Atlanta Ventures ended up leading their pre-Seed, Seed, and Series A. Monumental additions to the board were added including Rob Forman of Salesloft fame and Sean O'Brien of Overline. It was a powerful leadership team -- and one I personally learned so much from. Significant shout out to Sean O'Brien for dusting off his striking I-banking / M&A skills to steward the acquisition process.
Our quarterly dinners and meetings were something I looked forward to and cherished. Pandemic lows pushed the team to the brink; everyone dug deep and tapped into the entrepreneurial tenacity that the greats possess.
Ty, Hubert, and team triumphed.
As of this morning, Grayscale was acquired by the publicly traded HR company Paylocity!
This milestone is another major demonstration if you have a dream, an idea, a ready market, and a phenomenal team (Charles Porges, Sydney Cummings, Joe Yeager, Kaylee Daniel, Monica Kuiper - just to name a few), anything is possible, particularly in Atlanta.
Congratulations to all!
The fundraising game has changed. The investors are different. The market is different. AI changed everything. If no one's told you how that affects your raise, this is the room for you. RSVP here: https://t.co/ixkuMmjMuW
