Still one of the coolest things to ever happen on social media. Kirk Franklin randomly pop up on Jackson State campus and they happened to be playing his song on the plaza and he runs and starts singing with the students.
Jim Harbaugh said, "Absolutely, you can improve and become better at toughness. It's a talent, but it can be acquired, too. I think of it like building a callus."
Toughness is not a talent, it's a skill.
• It's mental.
• It's physical.
You build toughness through facing challenges, overcoming adversity, and having the perseverance to push forward despite obstacles.
• It takes resilience.
• It takes consistency.
• It takes the ability to face challenges head-on.
Your ability to be tough is developed, not inherited.
How to Be Mentally Tougher:
1. Accept that it is a journey - Mental toughness is a skill that you develop from facing challenges, setbacks, and perseverance. Work on it and build it through how you prepare every day. Believe in your future and your potential.
2. Practice and perfect your ability to focus - To be tough, it means focusing on what matters. The most resilient people understand that you can only "control what you can control". By accepting this, you are focusing and prioritizing on what you own and accepting there are things outside your circumstance. This gives you responsibility, ownership, and hope.
3. Commit to consistency - To be mentally tougher, you need to be consistent. This means consistent with your mindset and your approach. The best athletes know that you are never as great as your good moments, and never as bad as your bad moments. By bringing consistency, you are choosing to see the wave instead of riding the wave.
4. Practice by doing hard things - By doing tough things, you are building your ability to be flexible and adaptable. People often think toughness is just determination, but it's also your ability to not be dependent on your current environment. Practice allows you to help your mind and body simulate that future stress.
5. Improve your threshold for stress - Toughness is always tested under stressful circumstances. Work on your ability to improve your stress responses whether it's meditation, breath work, or visualization. By improving your threshold, you prepare your mind and body to better handle adversity and challenges when they appear.
6. Work on your perspective and mindset - Your mindset and perspective shape how you interpret and respond to challenges. A positive and resilient mindset enables you to view obstacles as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable barriers. This approach encourages a proactive attitude towards adversity, fostering a stronger, more adaptable character that helps you learn from setbacks and thrive under approach.
