@MrMattock That's absoulutely lovely. Liking the repeated subtraction to simplify the fraction. It is not something I have thought about but makes perfect sense!
After 20 years in #maths#education, I thought I knew everything there was to know about #fractions. That is until a little video crossed my path today that introduced a result so simple, I couldn't believe I wasn't already aware of it!
Read my latest (relatively short) blog post to find out what the result was: https://t.co/3o2QH0Sw2e
In order to master a field, you must love the subject and feel a profound connection to it. Your interest must transcend the field and border on the religious.
📐 Fancy a day of maths, ideas and good company?
MathsConf40 is happening on Saturday 18th April 2026 at City of Derby Academy — and it’s one not to miss!
It’s the UK’s biggest get-together for maths teachers, packed with practical workshops, fresh ideas, and plenty of time to chat with others who love maths as much as you do. Whether you’re after classroom tips or bigger-picture thinking, there’ll be something for you.
Best bit? The vibe. People come for the CPD and stay for the community — you’ll leave feeling inspired, energised, and full of new ideas to try out.
Huge thanks to @AQAMaths for supporting the event as our Events Innovation Partner.

After 7.5 years of working together, one of my long-term homeschooled students has passed his GCSE equivalent (Functional Skills Level 2) in maths!
One of the most complex and rewarding tutoring journeys of my entire career.
It was Christmas Eve. Bob Cratchit not only had to put up with the tyranny of Ebenezer Scrooge but also with non decimal currency. Mixed-base (radix) arithmetic and all. The history of the £ Sterling goes back ~2000 years.
