The military’s Chinook fleet will soon be more lethal than ever before - with the introduction of drones.
For decades, the Chinook has been the workhorse of the British military, flying soldiers and equipment into battle.
But now aviation commanders are looking to revamp the helicopter fighting force, transforming some of the heavy-lift aircraft into drone carriers.
Tests are well under way to demonstrate how unmanned, autonomous drones can be deployed from the back of the Chinooks. It could revolutionise how the double-rotor helicopters are used, the military says, giving crews an unprecedented ability to strike targets with swarms of drones.
“This will make Britain’s helicopter force easily 10 times more lethal,” Brig Nick English, Commander of the Army’s 1st Aviation Brigade Combat Team, told me.
“This gives us options we never had before. You can use drones to fly ahead of the Chinook. They might have cameras that can look at targets 20km away.
“What if they were bigger? We could have 16 drones in a tube that could deploy from the Chinook with a whole load of electronic warfare equipment. Now I can jam the enemy.
“Larger drones could also carry a whole load of missiles and now I’ve got a Chinook with missiles.
“We’re rewriting the whole doctrine of how Chinooks can be used on operations. It’s a fundamental change in how we will be able to fight.”
Overseen by Joint Aviation Command, trials have been ongoing for the past year and are gaining momentum. Commanders hope Chinooks could deploy with a fleet of drones aboard in the next 12 to 18 months.
