12 years on, people ask: how can we follow the path the Pope is calling us to? For parishes, communities and the curious, I have written a retreat “with” Francis, based on the Ignatian Exercises which shaped him. In English, español, français, italiano and português.
Technical issues force Pope Leo XIV to disembark plane in Tenerife. He is then offered the King of Spain’s plane to return to Rome. @CNN Report from inside the aircraft:

Leone XIV dalle Canarie sui migranti: “l’Europa non può proclamare la dignità umana e abituarsi a che il Mediterraneo e l’Atlantico siano cimiteri senza lapidi. La comunità internazionale è chiamata a una cooperazione efficace e perseverante”
“The war in Ukraine — which [today marks] 1,569 days, or more than four years and three months — has now outlasted World War I.”

Very impressive how Leo switches between Castilian and Catalán at the iconic monastery of Montserrat (address from 1:25) https://t.co/OhEBzn2T8A via @YouTube
Looking ahead with excitement to tomorrow evening’s Sagrada Familia Mass with Pope Leo, here is a piece I wrote in 2010, after being present at Benedict XVI’s consecration of the cathedral. https://t.co/uAjY2ZD0vn
BREAKING: Israel has just issued an evacuation order for the entirety of the biblical city of Tyre.
No more “safe zones.” No more fake ceasefire. No more good-cop-bad-cop routine between Trump and Netanyahu.
Israeli ethnic cleansing is in full effect.
Spain, more than any other country in Europe, has been the the country that has most quickly grasped the missionary, synodal, pastoral (etc.) conversion called for by Evangelii Gaudium, and is therefore the ideal launch pad for what is a Leo priority: the mission to Europe.
Leo made 🔥 call to Madrid diocese last night to a missionary synodal conversion: to walk with seekers, transform culture, open parishes to HS in communal discernment, and priests / PPCs to see this not as threat but opportunity. Leo is bringing Evangelii Gaudium to Europe.
Both of Spain’s leading newspapers, @el_pais and @abc_es, use the same headline — “miracle in Congress” — to describe rapturous reception of Leo’s address yesterday to the Cortés, despite challenges to both left and right. And say the 7-minute applause is unprecedented.
This is an astonishing turnaround in public opinion, one of the legacies of Bibi Netanyahu. And because it is most evident among younger Americans, it is not yet fully felt in the political system.
Leo’s silence is absolutely correct. There is nothing worth discussing that has not already been raised in the dialogue with Leo’s official intermediary, Cdl Fernández. Pagliarani knows the choice he faces. The rest is just power games.
SSPX superior general Fr Davide Pagliarani says in a new interview that he sincerely wishes to meet Pope Leo XIV and is “astonished that, from the Holy Father, there has been no response or personal reaction up to now.” He adds that he “struggle[s] to understand this silence.”
Leo to Spanish bishops is asking the Church to adapt to a new situation in which lay people are assuming responsibilities and evangelization is carried out from a place of humility.
In a world torn by ever deeper fractures and conflicts, Leo invites Spanish bishops to create a witness to a plural unity “capable of welcoming the wealth of gifts, charisms and insights which the Holy Spirit is calling forth in the People of God.”
What made Leo’s Cortes speech so effective was its internal coherence, its call for a moral order rooted in Kingdom values as a means of guaranteeing what everyone wants from their different political perspectives … Augustinian to its core, but without ever mentioning Augustine!
