CBC are delighted to welcome back past pupils Eanna McCarthy ( Captain ), Michael Foy, ( Vice Captain ), and Conor Kennelly who played in the Six Nations U20 Competition against England last evening in Virgin Media Park.
When I talk about the effect on children of behavioural practices which are used in some schools, I’m often told that these are trivial.
Telling children that if they don’t attend school every day their future lives will be blighted?
“Of course they understand that this doesn’t apply if they have a medical appointment or need a stay in hospital!”
Whole class rewards like a lollypop for every child in a class with full attendance?
“It’s only a lollypop!”
Line-ups for uniform checks with instant detention for minor issues?
“It’s so easy to just wear correct uniform!”
Behaviour points projected onto the white board so the whole class can see who the ‘bad kids’ are?”
“Why don’t you worry about the important stuff, like those who are disrupting the class?”
I talk about this stuff because for kids, this is the important stuff.
This is the stuff that keeps them up at night. This is the stuff that means that they sink into despair. This is the stuff that affects their peer relationships.
For many, this is what makes them feel that school isn’t a place which welcomes them, just as they are.
I know it doesn’t have to be like this, because some schools are doing things very differently and those families talk to me too. Just because something seems trivial to adults, doesn’t mean that it is for children.
This, after all, is the very nature of childhood.

Last month 493 of you told us that over 1 in 4 children who are entitled to the summer programme cannot access it. We brought this to @1Hildegarde attention and are pleased to be meeting with the Minister on this on 🗓️Tuesday the 3rd September. We would like to bring your voice into this meeting.
⬇️ Please take 1-minute of your precious time to tell us what the Government needs to change to enhance this important programme by clicking here

Thank you @AdamPHarris for saying such lovely things about my book "Being Autistic (and what that actually means)" in this article in @echolivecork. I may have cried a happy tear (or 10) ❤

"some autistic children learn language in a range of inherently atypical ways, including without neurotypical joint attentional skills" https://t.co/j0SUBwT0QW editorial on gestalt language (& what if autistics generally learn in "inherently atypical ways" given the opportunity?)
It is good for families and good for professionals that there is proper guidance and clarity given on the issue of qualified psychologists to conduct autism assessments. Long over due but welcome and needs to be followed up by CORU regulation also.
That autistic people die up to 15 years younger than their non-autistic peers or that their will & preference is frequently dismissed & not held centrally is not good enough. Time to flip the narrative & add years to life & life to years for every person

Autistic autonomy has to be central if we're going to progress and change what needs to be changed. Essential we yield the floor (NOW!) to every person as the expert in themselves :)
We would like to thank the amazing Sharon McCarthy, author, podcaster, lecturer & autistic advocate and the creator of the @AutismFm podcast for her inspiring presentation at our Positive Ageing GRASP site launch in December. Positive Ageing Presentation- https://t.co/sQklXXG6wr
Really insightful presentation from Dr Burke @tilda_tcd who discussed the current experiences of intellectually disabled autistic people in healthcare and highlighting some of the things that will impact positively and ultimately increase longevity #AutismJourneys#Gheel

Distressing read. Both ABA & PBS have been (officially) identified as breaching autistic human rights & still these "research" pieces are funded & continue to happen. About time ABA was permanently replaced with AAA - Acutally Autonomous Autistic. Thanks for sharing @AnnMemmott
A referendum is a massive opportunity to improve the rights and well being of our people.
The upcoming referendum on care if passed in such a diluted form places a brake on realizing the ambitions, rights and needs of carers and those being cared for.
We can and must do better.
Personal Essay call out to #Autistic#Irish adults!
This is a lovely opportunity to tell your story in a book that will be published by @NewIslandBooks.
