Wahhābī fatwā supporting Jihād against the English colonisers

Sh ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Laṭīf Āl al-Shaykh, a direct descendant of Sh Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb and a supporter of King ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, gave a fatwā stating the following:

1) The obligation of fighting English colonialism in the eastern Gulf.

2) The prohibition and danger of what the rulers of the Arabian coast did in allying with the English.

3) Criticism of the Ottoman state because of its surrender before the Christians, and holding it responsible for this calamity and the spread of evil and corruption.

• Here are some statements from Sh ʿAbdullāh b. ʿAbd al-Laṭīf within the fatwā:

❝What is obligatory upon you, O leaders and commanders among the people of the coasts and towns, is unity of word in adhering to your religion, fighting your enemy, exerting yourselves fully for fighting, going forth against the stubborn, preparing armies and detachments, giving gifts and grants, lending wealth to the One Who multiplies and increases it, and handing over the goods of souls without delay to their Purchaser. You must go forth in the path of Allāh, light and heavy, and rise to call for fighting the enemies of Allāh, mounted and on foot. You must purify yourselves, through the blood of the polytheists and disbelievers, from the filth of sins and the impurities of burdens.❞

❝This accursed group—the Christian group that has settled in your vicinity, crowded you in your religion, and demanded that you enter into obedience to it—they are the ones whom Allāh mentioned in the Qurʾān. The Exalted said: {They have certainly disbelieved who say that Allāh is the third of three, while there is no deity except one deity}. [5:73]❞

❝This, without doubt, is among the greatest kinds of apostasy, an alignment with a religion other than the religion of Islām, and entry into the religion of Christianity—refuge is sought in Allāh from that. It is as though you are in times of interruption (fatrah), or people who grew up in a place where nothing of the light of the message reached them.❞

❝So repent to Allāh all together, O believers, so that you may succeed, and return to your religion by fighting your enemies among the disbelievers and polytheists. Allāh has tested you through them and tried you by their nearness to your lands. He has made it an act of worship for you and commanded you to fight them, and He has obligated it upon you: {Fighting has been prescribed for you, though it is disliked by you. Perhaps you dislike something while it is good for you, and perhaps you love something while it is bad for you. Allāh knows, and you do not know}. [2:216]❞

❝A day of guarding the frontier is better than the world and what it contains, along with other virtues of fighting that are established in the texts of the Sunnah and the Book. Thus every rational person must seek exposure to these ranks, assist the one undertaking them, join him, and enter into his ranks, so that you may gain the trade of the Hereafter and remain safe in your religion.❞

❝This [Ottoman] state that affiliates itself with Islām is the one that has corrupted for people their religion and their worldly life. They surrendered to Christianity, united their word with them, and their harm and evil fell upon the people of Islām and the community that responds to its Prophet and is sincere to its Lord. Allāh is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs. My success is only through Allāh; upon Him I rely, and to Him I turn. May Allāh send prayers and peace upon Muḥammad, his family, and his Companions.❞
