📁 revisiting the story of how wonbin’s journey began.
sm first discovered wonbin through a few selfies on social media. since he was living in ulsan, the company was so worried another agency might spot him first that they even sent staff to pick him up at seoul station, put a mask on him as soon as he arrived, covered his school name tag, and took him straight to the company.
wonbin later laughed about how confused he was because he was just an ordinary student and had no idea why they were hiding him like that. he also shared that before joining sm, he had never really danced. he only started dancing after becoming a trainee, and at first he decided to give the audition a try because he didn’t want to go to school and thought, “why not, even if it turns out to be nothing?” he had always been interested in music, so he saw it as his chance and went for it.
then years later, he and shotaro suggested creating a choreography to show the company. they filmed a dance video with the members they were practicing with at the time and sent it in, and the company responded, “let them debut as riize.”
from getting cast while literally lying in bed, to learning how to dance only after joining sm, and eventually helping create the video that laid the foundation for riize’s debut… wonbin’s trainee story is still one of my favorite stories.

260515 WONBIN for ARENA HOMME+ China May Issue — Cover Story (1/5)
“Wonbin|Flower and Blade Growing Together — Edge of Grace”
If flower and blade are to coexist, there first must be a skeleton clear-headed enough to hold them both. A flower has never only symbolized softness; and a blade does not merely mean sharpness. Within the same space of growth, these two textures begin to exist side by side — one blooming outward into beauty, while the other quietly sharpens inward into restraint and strength.
「A Beginning Held Up by Love」
Wonbin’s earliest memory stops somewhere around the age of four or five. At the time, his parents were busy working, and while he attended kindergarten, it was always his older brother who picked him up and dropped him off. Sometimes, a child’s sense of security comes from this kind of repeated companionship: someone appearing at a fixed time, someone holding your hand on the way home, someone quietly placing daily care and attention into your childhood. Perhaps the warmth of that hand taught him very early on that love can be something tangible — the comfort of being remembered, waited for, and brought home.
He grew up surrounded by abundant love. Wonbin has always worn a star necklace, a gift custom-made for him after his parents melted down their wedding rings. On the back of the star are the initials of his parents’ names, like a small guardian resting close to his heart. It is such a small and concrete object, yet it reveals how carefully cherished he was while growing up. His parents placed blessings, memories, expectations, and love into these personal belongings, giving shape to emotions that otherwise could not be touched or preserved.
The seed of music was also gently planted in this kind of family environment. At ten years old, Wonbin learned guitar from his father and often carried an acoustic guitar to school. For a child, musical enlightenment may first come through a few chords taught hand-in-hand by a parent, through the guitar resting on one’s shoulder after school, through melodies and laughter naturally flowing through the house. Because this beginning was light and intimate enough, music never became a burden or demand; instead, it became a beam of light that arrived early in his life, illuminating the first road before he ever met the stage.
Years later, when recalling those first moments with music, he said they were truly meaningful. Something he happened to learn as a child could still be shown to fans on stage today, and he finds that especially wonderful. A skill learned in childhood unexpectedly brought new joy many years later. That accidental beginning, sustained through years of love and practice, eventually reached the stage with him. The guitar his father once handed to him became one of the ways he expresses himself. And the support his family once gave him was transformed, one day, into songs, stages, and sincerity directed toward fans.
Because of this, the most moving thing about Wonbin has always been connected to being loved. Flowers watered by love grow not only soft petals, but roots deeply anchored into the soil. Those who have been loved well often understand how precious love is; those who have once been truly seen are also more willing to sincerely return the gaze of others.
Wonbin always treasures everything his fans give him, and always tries to express his feelings clearly and sing them fully. As he himself said, loving and supporting someone is not easy. So the sincerity that reaches him, the long periods of waiting, companionship, and attention — he notices all of it, remembers it one by one, and slowly responds to those feelings in his own way.

260515 WONBIN for ARENA HOMME+ China May Issue — Cover Story (2/5)
「Sharpening Inward」
Wonbin seems to have learned early on how to coexist with his own body. During his school days, he was part of the track and field team, specializing in middle- and long-distance running, earning him the nickname “Ulsan Cheetah.” Running trained not only speed, but also his sense of rhythm, breathing, and endurance. Later, those bodily memories entered the stage — becoming the sharpness in his movements, the control between every beat, and his almost instinctive sensitivity toward perfection.
When talking about music, dance, and performing, Wonbin never casually accepted the label of “talent.” He said he himself does not know whether he has talent, and that he only made it this far because he worked hard continuously. Somehow, this statement carries even more weight coming from him. He rarely dramatizes effort or turns hardship into stories; instead, he calmly returns everything to daily practice repeated over and over. Being able to stand on stage with the things he loves and excels at, showing them to the public and to fans, is what makes him feel both happy and grounded.
That groundedness often comes from strictness toward himself and an intense ambition toward the stage. To the writer, “ambition” has never been a negative word, and Wonbin seems to think the same way. When asked what he feels most ambitious about, he answered almost immediately: the stage. As a singer, he believes standing on stage without ambition simply isn’t possible. His ambition feels almost like constant self-calibration — endlessly adjusting himself: his voice could still become steadier, his movements more precise, his emotions pushed slightly further, today’s self accomplishing just a little more than yesterday’s.
There is one moment many people remember: in order to achieve the high note he envisioned, he tightly wrapped a belt around himself, forcing his breathing and strength beyond their limits. The image carries an almost clumsy stubbornness. In an era where so many things are quickly packaged and quickly consumed, there is still someone willing to return himself to the most primitive form of practice — trying again and again, polishing little by little, even if the method appears nearly obsessive, just to personally reach a sound closer to his ideal. Wonbin’s seriousness toward the stage has never remained a pretty declaration wrapped in sugarcoating; he transforms his obsession with performance into physically intense training and endless refinement. Perhaps the secret to his success is hidden within every sweat-soaked practice shirt.
When facing anxiety and hardship, Wonbin said he fully allows himself to feel those emotions, then thinks:
“Ah, whatever, let’s just do it.”
And somehow, he gets through it like that. It is honestly an unexpected answer. Most people resist or avoid emotions like these, but Wonbin does not see them that way. To him, only by accepting emotions fully, understanding the real reasons behind them, and finding solutions can one truly deal with them properly. Of course, the process may still include nervousness, confusion, exhaustion, and chaos, yet he still chooses to continue moving forward.
Only muddy roads can leave behind clear footprints. Perhaps Wonbin’s resilience was shaped through countless moments of simply saying, “let’s just do it.” The breathing on the track field, the sweat inside practice rooms, the strictness he places upon himself before stepping onto stage, the frustration when unsatisfied with his singing, and those words spoken in difficult moments — all of it gradually shaped him into who he is today. Beauty may be what first makes people notice him, but what truly makes them stay is the almost painfully honest effort he pours into the stage.

「Love That Carries Sound」
Many people may first become drawn to Wonbin because of his appearance. His face naturally carries a sense of glamour — sharp eyes, defined features, and a strong pull in front of the camera. Those unfamiliar with him may assume he is cold because of this beauty. But once people truly get to know him, they discover many soft and adorable sides to him. He relies on the people around him, acts cute, and never hesitates to express affection and longing toward fans.
This contrast is also one of the most touching things about him. Cameras can capture the sharpness of his features, but they struggle to fully record the small warmth hidden in his personality. For example, he remembers fans’ love very deeply, blames himself over the smallest dissatisfaction on stage, and feels comforted when fans tell him, “you really did well, don’t think like that.” Someone so strict with himself always keeps an especially soft place for fans. All the support, waiting, gazes, and cheers — he sees them, and treasures them carefully.
During one livestream, someone once asked Wonbin what kind of person he wanted to become. He answered:
“Someone who is sincere in everything.”
It was a deeply moving answer, and one that suits him well. Wonbin’s sincerity is rarely dressed up in complicated ways; his love is always tangible. Whether it is loudly shouting love in front of cameras, repeatedly giving his all on stage without lowering his standards, or always keeping a gentle and open heart toward fans. Appearance may make people stop and look at him, but sincerity is what makes people continue approaching him. Over time, what truly touches people becomes the cleanness and steadiness in his personality — a core that is not easily shaken by outside opinions.
Music is another way Wonbin conveys sincerity. He said there are truly many emotions that can be expressed through music. Anger can be placed into songs, and complicated feelings can be entrusted to melodies. To him, music is like a wider river, capable of carrying emotions that cannot easily be explained in words. On stage, he can appear sharp, intense, and ambitious; but through singing, softer emotions emerge. Longing, gratitude, cherishment, and love too difficult to fully verbalize often become clearer inside melodies.

260515 WONBIN for ARENA HOMME+ China May Issue — Cover Story (4/5)
During a previous group interview, Wonbin softly hummed part of the Chinese song Red Bean (《红豆》), a song he has loved since trainee days. The melody carries emotions that are moving, bittersweet, and restrained — like longing slowly simmered over time. The writer says the song suits him well. He is not someone who expresses love in flashy ways; more often, he hides sincerity inside melodies, greetings, and carefully prepared performances, before finally presenting them to fans with a warm smile.
In this interview, he also mentioned that if given the chance in the future, he would like to fully cover a Chinese song. Previously, he had only sung short snippets during concerts, so he hopes to one day perform a complete version. He said he likes Chinese songs and has many things he wants to show Chinese BRIIZE. If some feelings cannot fully cross language barriers, then perhaps songs can bring people closer instead.
Wonbin’s love toward fans often carries this precious sense of “cherishing.” As he said himself, loving someone is not easy, so being loved and supported should never be taken for granted. That is why he treasures it deeply. Fans’ support becomes cheers, then gathers into lights beneath the stage, countless feelings of love condensing into the brilliant stage lights illuminating Wonbin’s dreams.
When asked what fans sitting below the concert stage look like from an idol’s perspective, he thought carefully for a while before saying:
“It’s really beautiful, really pretty. Looking down from the stage, whether it’s the lightsticks or the scene when everyone waved their phone flashlights together while we performed Midnight Mirage recently in Seoul — it was truly beautiful.”
Wonbin’s heart seems to contain a very soft piece of soil. The love given by his family, the security he felt as a child, the first chords his father taught him on guitar, and the lights raised by fans beneath the stage — all seeped into him like water. That love did not remain in the past; it continues sprouting inside him, watering flower after flower filled with affection.
「Flower and Blade Growing Together」
Flowers never grow loudly. They require enough time to wait, enough patience to protect them, quietly gathering strength in unseen places. Before branches and leaves fully unfold, there is always a period of silence. The moments that truly determine shape often happen before anyone can see them.
Wonbin’s path has likely been the same. The details refined over and over again, the standards he never loosens for himself, his unwavering obsession toward the stage, and his careful way of responding to love — all of it slowly stacks together, pulling each other forward. Over time, softness grew bones, and sharpness gained warmth.
If one flower were to symbolize Wonbin, chamomile would fit well. It appears delicate, with fine petals and clean colors, yet it always reminds people of resilience within hardship. The harsher the environment, the more clearly one can see its quiet strength while growing. Wonbin carries a similar quality. Beauty never made him shallow, and coldness never erased his warmth. His roots run deeply — into his family’s love, into the childhood guitar, into the sweat of practice rooms, into self-blame on stage, and into the comfort and lights given to him by fans.
And so, flower and blade share the same growth within him. Outwardly, there is light, beauty, and visible elegance; inwardly, there is constant tightening, self-confirmation, and the force that pushes him toward becoming better. The flower gives him softness, while the blade gives him clarity and structure. Growing together, they create the kind of beauty Wonbin possesses — clear, sharp-edged, yet always carrying warmth.

260515 WONBIN for ARENA HOMME+ China May Issue — Cover Story (5/5)
The stage ahead of him will continue stretching further into the future. And when the lights rise again, he will stand at the center of even greater waves of sound, carrying with him the support of his family, every melody from his growth, all the sweat shed along the way, and the sincerity fans have placed into his hands — continuing to move forward.
The tenderness in Wonbin's heart has blossomed from the warmth of being loved every step of the way, nurturing a soft flower within. And the sharp edge within him, too, is often sheathed and honed again and again in silence. Softness and sharpness have grown together within him, one side enabling him to remain true to his heart, the other propelling him with clarity toward the stage, until he has finally forged his own path. It ensures that even in the wind, he still has roots to lean on, and in the light, a blade to follow.
Floral blades are born together, ultimately forging their own chapter through a long and arduous tempering.

Park Wonbin was born in the Seongbuk-gu district of Seoul but he spent the majority of his childhood and formative years in Ulsan Metropolitan City. From a very young age, Wonbin showed immense promise as an athlete, excelling in both short-distance and mid-distance track and field events. His athletic talents extended beyond just running, as he also had experience as a taekwondo poomsae (forms) competitor. Whether it was the explosive speed of track and field, the discipline of Taekwondo poomsae or swimming and fencing, he spent his elementary years giving his all. Yet, hidden beneath that competitive exterior was a quiet, fragile dream: he wanted to be an artist. To a young boy in Ulsan, however, that dream felt like a distant star, beautiful but far too high to reach. Convinced it was an impossible goal, he tried to settle for more "realistic" paths, focusing on his guitar or his life as an athlete. But when his track career finally came to an end, Wonbin found himself standing in a painful silence.. With no clear dream left to hold onto, he began preparing for a completely different life, even planning to move to Japan to be a sushi "master" then... fate intervened in the most ordinary way. One day, while lying in bed and not wanting to go to school, a single Instagram DM from SM Entertainment changed everything. The "impossible" dream was suddenly knocking on his door. After panicking a little, he was seen desperately asking in his Instagram account about good dancers in Ulsan to prepare for his audition.
He went into that audition with nothing but raw determination, singing twelve different songs. When the judges asked him to freestyle, a terrifying task for someone who had never had a single dance lesson, he pushed through the embarrassment and just "went for it" with a heart full of hope and dreams.
He was accepted in 2019 and for four years and six months, Wonbin lived in the shadows as a trainee, thinking of giving up and finding resolution to continue.. working tirelessly honing his talents and waiting for his moment...ultimately debuting with RIIZE on September 4th of 2023 and fulfilling his long-held dream. And just two years later, he was standing in the center of Tokyo Dome, his voice echoing in front of 55,000 people...
The boy who once thought his dreams were out of reach proved to himself and the world that sometimes, the stars aren't as far away as they seem. 🌟

the reason wonbin is good at everything ♡︎
as a trainee,
wonbin had almost no real experience with singing or dancing before becoming a trainee. when he first entered the company, he would quietly stay in the back, carefully watching the older trainees and trying his best to follow along little by little. despite having no proper training beforehand, staff members already told him during evaluations that he had natural talent in both singing and dancing.
just two weeks after joining the company, he was already standing on the showcase stage. over time, he kept improving at an unbelievable pace, eventually becoming the trainee who ranked first at the showcase two years later.
but his trainee days were never easy. wonbin himself talked about going through a long slump where he constantly blamed himself. no matter how hard he practiced, he felt like he couldn’t see any improvement and often cried out of frustration because he didn’t even know what the problem was. he said there was even a point where he felt hopeless, like nothing would work no matter what he did.
instead of giving up, he slowly focused on improving his skills one by one. as time passed, he realized that all the effort he once thought was meaningless had actually been building up little by little without him noticing. sungchan also talked about how quickly wonbin grew as a trainee, saying he learned choreography unusually fast and already had his own unique style despite still being new.
wonbin spent nearly all his time in the practice room, practicing until he personally felt satisfied. through endless effort, frustration, and growth, he slowly became “that trainee” everyone talked about.
as an athlete,
wonbin had strong athletic ability from a very young age. he tried many different sports growing up, including taekwondo, track and field, swimming, fencing, climbing, and more. members even said his swimming skills were almost at the level of an actual athlete.
he originally joined the track team because he was naturally fast and wanted to be with his friends, but once he started, he trained seriously. despite his parents worrying because his body was not very strong at first, he continued practicing intensely every day.
his routine started as early as 6am with morning training, regular practice, and night training. through both natural talent and hard work, his relay team’s record improved significantly, eventually winning competitions, and he officially became a registered athlete.
later, because of a back injury, he had no choice but to stop being an athlete. although he said he felt regret over it, the experience shaped the strong mentality and perseverance he still carries with him today.
as an idol now,
wonbin is already the kind of all-rounder idol who feels complete in every aspect. visuals, vocals, dance, stage presence, center presence, even instruments like guitar. but what makes people stay is the way he constantly keeps trying to grow even more instead of settling where he already is.
he’s such a perfectionist in the way he thinks about himself and his work. even after doing well, he still reflects on things deeply, studies more, practices more, and keeps trying to improve little by little. whether it’s performing, improving his skills, thinking about how to become an even cooler artist… you can really tell he approaches everything sincerely.
despite how busy his schedules are, he still always tries to stay close to fans in his own gentle way. updating throughout the day, comforting fans when they worry, speaking carefully, remembering little things people say, and always wanting to communicate more honestly and naturally with briize.
and beyond being talented, he’s also just genuinely kind-hearted. very polite, well-mannered, thoughtful, and warm toward both fans and the people around him. the more time passes, the more it feels like wonbin is someone who never stops growing, both as an artist and as a person.
