The Suez Crisis of 1956 was a major international confrontation sparked by Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s nationalization of the Suez Canal on 26 July 1956. The canal, a vital maritime route linking the Mediterranean and Red Seas, had been operated by the British-French Suez Canal Company under a concession due to expire in 1968. Nasser’s action followed the withdrawal of American and British funding for the Aswan High Dam project, which he attributed to Western disapproval of his independent foreign policy, including arms purchases from the Soviet bloc.

Britain, France and Israel secretly coordinated a military response. On 29 October 1956 Israeli forces invaded the Sinai Peninsula and advanced rapidly toward the canal. Britain and France then issued a joint ultimatum demanding both Egyptian and Israeli forces withdraw from the canal zone. When Egypt refused, they launched air strikes and, on 5–6 November, landed troops at Port Said, claiming to separate the combatants and secure the waterway. Their true aims were to reassert control of the canal and topple Nasser.

Intense international pressure, led by the United States under President Dwight D. Eisenhower and supported by the Soviet Union, forced a ceasefire on 6–7 November. The United Nations established an Emergency Force to supervise the withdrawal. British and French troops left Egypt by 22 December 1956; Israeli forces completed their withdrawal in March 1957.

The crisis accelerated the decline of British and French imperial power, elevated Nasser as a leading figure of Arab nationalism, confirmed the dominant roles of the United States and Soviet Union in the Middle East, and set an important precedent for United Nations peacekeeping operations. It clearly demonstrated that European military intervention without American support was no longer viable in the post-colonial era.

The trial stems from the 2024 Cass Review, which found the evidence base for puberty blockers (gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues) in treating gender incongruence or dysphoria in under-18s “remarkably weak.” This led to an indefinite UK-wide ban on routine NHS or private prescriptions outside research settings. PATHWAYS, led by King’s College London and funded by the NHS and Department of Health, aims to generate robust data on benefits versus risks.

It plans to recruit around 226 children under 16 who are already under specialist gender services, with a diagnosis of gender incongruence, at least two years of persistence, and who have started puberty. Minimum ages are 11 for those registered female at birth and 12 for those registered male. Participants undergo extensive assessment (over many months by specialists), require parental consent, and must demonstrate understanding of risks and benefits. Half receive blockers immediately for up to 24 months; others wait 12 months. Outcomes tracked include mental health, quality of life, cognition, bone health, and more, with clear stop criteria for concerns such as reduced bone density.

Recruitment was set to begin around 1 August 2026. Critics maintain young children cannot give meaningful informed consent to interventions with irreversible potential effects. Supporters, including Cass Review author Baroness Cass, argue the trial is essential to resolve uncertainty and prevent harm from unregulated or poorly evidenced practice. The ruling prioritises regulatory processes over judicial intervention on clinical research design.

Following World War I, the United States retreated into isolationism, determined never again to send its sons to die in distant European trenches. A series of Neutrality Acts passed by Congress in the mid-1930s forbade the sale of arms, loans, or travel by Americans on ships of nations at war. Most citizens believed the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans provided sufficient protection from foreign storms.

Yet aggression mounted. Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler remilitarized, seized Austria and Czechoslovakia, and invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, starting war in Europe. Imperial Japan had invaded China in 1937 and advanced into Southeast Asia. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, convinced American security was threatened, sought to aid the Allies while respecting isolationist sentiment. The cash-and-carry provision of 1939 and the Lend-Lease Act of March 1941 allowed the United States to become the “arsenal of democracy,” shipping weapons, food, and supplies to Britain, China, and later the Soviet Union.

Japan’s expansion collided with American sanctions. In July 1941 the United States froze Japanese assets and cut off oil exports, leaving Tokyo with dwindling reserves. Japanese leaders decided a decisive blow against the U.S. Pacific Fleet was needed. At dawn on December 7, 1941, carrier-launched aircraft struck Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. In less than two hours, eighteen warships were sunk or damaged, nearly three hundred planes destroyed, and 2,403 Americans killed.

The nation was stunned and unified. On December 8 Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan; the vote was overwhelming. Three days later Germany and Italy declared war on the United States. America, long reluctant, had been dragged fully into World War II. This event ended isolationism and propelled the United States into a total war effort that would reshape the world.
