As the sun set's here in #hawaii🌴, we want to say #mahalo for attending #BLS7Hawaii! We have enjoyed a full week of excellent talks, posters and beach parties! We hope to see you all soon (hopefully in person), at the next @biologging conference!
See you all at the last #BLS7Hawaii#virtual BEACH PARTY starting in 10 min. on Spatial Chat! ️We would love to see you one last time as the conference comes to a close and join us in congratulating the awardees! #biologging
Check out the last Short Transmissions session starting in 5 min. to see the awesome #posters presented at #BLS7Hawaii! Ask❓'s & interact with presenters by using the #discussion tab. On-Demand content is also available for you to access! #biologging
Aaaaand, that’s a wrap on Featured Oral sessions for #BLS7Hawaii! Mahalo nui loa to all the presenters AND moderators! So many excellent discussions about amazing science! 🤯… but, don’t forget there’s still plenty of on-demand content to watch!!!
Join us for the final Featured Oral Session of #BLS7Hawaii, Social Behavior featuring @SimonRipperger, Aina Pons, Hila Shamon, Shay Rotics and @DrHannahJW… all talks will be available for replay within a few hours #biologging
@DrHannahJW shows that social sampling of cues related to #energy expenditure in the locomotion of others can increase certainty in expectation for energetically-efficient movement in dynamic and unpredictable environments. #biologging
Social mole-rats live exclusively underground in large groups with a single breeding female (queen). Using body-acceleration biologging, Shay Rotics & colleagues studied their work division in the wild & found queens engage less in cooperative activities than non-breeding indivs.
Little is known about collective movement or its importance in informing the decisions of individuals within a group. Hila Shamon & colleagues tracked movements & assessed genetic relatedness of 30% of a Plains #bison herd. We found relatedness impacted herd collective movements.
@SimonRipperger shares that proximity #sensors show that although vampire #bat social networks change dramatically based on time, context & individual health, they are based on strong social preferences that extend from inside to outside the roost & from the lab to the field.

@joergmelzheimer shares how communication hubs of an asocial #cat are the source of a human–carnivore conflict and key to its solution. #Cheetahs, Farmers, Researchers – Togetherness #biologging
#Pacific#cod in the #BeringSea are moving north as waters warm and sea ice decreases. Listen to Julie Nielson's talk to find out how satellite #tags provide insights into the nature of this northward shift in Pacific cod distribution & implications for #fisheries#management.
Check out the next Featured Oral Session of #BLS7Hawaii#Day5, Wildlife Management featuring Verena Peschko, Manon Clairbaux , Julie Nielson, @joergmelzheimer and @Thunnus… all talks will be available for replay within a few hours #biologging
The newly developed micro-sonar #tags helped @CEBC_ChizeLab characterize the mid trophic level assemblage in the southern #elephantseal habitats in Argentina and showed us that it is linked to water mass physical properties but not directly to #foraging behaviors of the seals.
Old #biologging instruments, new uses: 16 yrs. of time-depth recorders on northern #elephantseals resurface for oceanographic applications/ecology. @theresarkeates shows seals in search of deep-water prey use mesoscale ocean features & profile w/ high resolution temp measurements
@_Apple_Cinnamon & colleagues developed a method to estimate ocean #waves experienced by #seabirds utilizing streaked #shearwater & wandering #albatross floating motion records. Wandering albatrosses land on very high waves, indicating unexpected tolerance to wave🌊condition.
Shinichi Watanabe shares about a recently developed micro CTD logger mounted on Naru #eaglerays that could successfully measure vertical structures of temp/salinity in #coastal#water w/ fine temporal & vertically spatial scales. Haloclines observed when heavy rainfalls occurred.
