This is my amazing nephew. His story goes to show how being open to change and new possibilities can lead you to rewarding opportunities. Also, how organisations recognising potential can develop their greatest asset. @ColU_Official
Academy Spotlight | Journey Beyond the Pitch
Academy pathways are not always straight lines. For Kieran Michaels, they have been shaped by determination, opportunity and a commitment to giving back.
Kieran first joined the Colchester United Academy at the age of nine, experiencing the early highs and challenges of academy football before being released at Under-10s. A return to grassroots football followed, an experience he values for maintaining his love of the game before earning a pathway back into the Academy.
That journey came full circle midway through his Under-14 season, when Kieran earned a return to the U’s Academy following a successful trial. From there, he progressed through to scholarship level, training alongside talented players and learning daily from the standards around him, including future professionals such as Noah Chilvers.
During his second year as a scholar, Kieran faced another defining moment. While he was not offered a new deal as a player, he was simultaneously given the opportunity to remain within the Academy in a part-time coaching role. It proved to be a pivotal turning point.
Kieran spent nearly three years developing his coaching within the Academy before being appointed full-time Lead Phase Coach for the Under-11s to Under-13s at just 20 years old. The role provided invaluable experience, alongside opportunities to support Under-18s and Under-21s environments.
That growth led him into @ColU_CF where he now works as Head of Delivery. In his current role, Kieran supports staff development, leads training programmes and helps shape delivery across multiple sports, extending the club’s impact into the local community.
Holding a UEFA B Licence and with ambitions within coach development and mentoring, Kieran’s journey is a powerful reminder that academy success is not defined by one outcome. Sometimes, it’s about those who return to help shape the next generation, still representing the club, just in a different way.
