In November, a Chinese pigeon racer bought a Belgian-born bird at auction for $1.9 million.
The bird, named 'New Kim,' came from famed (in pigeon racing circles) breeder Gaston Van de Wouwer.
If you want to be successful in pigeon racing, you need the right bird - which means a bird with the right bloodlines and attributes.
With the popularity of the sport growing among folks with a lot of money to spend in China, that has caused the prices of racing pigeons to soar.
@BromleySoccer Yeah, comparatively DCU is one of lesser capitalized teams in MLS. Hard to truly judge since there are so many minority shareholders across the league now but among folks with larger shares I’d agree with your assessment.
@BromleySoccer Oh for sure; unfortunately not too many other ways to try to assess their finances without someone breaking an NDA. It’s also hard to compare a credit shop to an equity investment business but then we’re getting deep in the weeds.
@BromleySoccer Also to be fair - Kaplan was one of several founders of Oaktree and had/has his hand in multiple investments. This is their firm, and hopefully if they can sort the stadium situation the costs shouldn’t be that intense.
@BromleySoccer Fair point. The firm has seen massive growth (~$5bn AUM in 4/18 vs $12bn now, are opening in London). At the same time, if this is the kind of ownership group that garners shrugs in NWSL I’d say the league is moving in the right direction on that front.
