I've spent more time than I'd like to admit wallowing in loss.

"You don't know what you got 'til it's gone"... life teaches us this lesson again and again. As a kid, you lose a pet. Maybe a parent. A first love. And the yearn for what was is impossible to ignore.

But there's another side of that saying that doesn't get spoken or sung of nearly enough..

Losing that pet makes the sidewalk dog pats a little more sincere. Losing a parent softens you toward the family still around you. Losing a great love, the love doesn't disappear... it goes on living somewhere, in someone else.

I have found a kind of peace in all of this... that loss isn't really loss. Absence creates presence.
