Here are some ice safety tips;
Never go out on ice alone.
Make sure people know your plans.
You need 4" of ice to safely walk on it.
The ice near the shore is thicker than it is further out, especially early in the season.
Snow cover slows ice growth.
Try to get your forearms on the ice surface and kick your legs to "swim" onto the ice. If you get out then roll away from the hole towards solid ice. Get help/warm and dry as soon as you can. Hypothermia can set in in about 30 minutes.
The BFD Dive Team working with BPD, MSP and NEMLEC recovered the body of Owen Kasozi from Wenham Lake yesterday afternoon. Our hearts go out to her family and friends.
