3Blue1Brown’s new video explains why every LLM is actually a compression machine.
everyone describes pre-training as “next token prediction” but that’s just the surface-level objective.
in reality it is a means to making the most efficient text compressor.
prediction and compression are two sides of the same coin.
when you train the model to predict the next token you’re not just teaching it to guess the next word but how to best encode the human knowledge it sees.
better compression
means better abstraction
means better reasoning
at some point, compression stops looking like storage or a database (as some like to call it on X)
and looks like an approximation of understanding.

🇺🇦 🇷🇺 F-16 DESTROYS 4 RUSSIAN HELICOPTERS IN LOW-LEVEL STRIKE ON TAGANROG BASE
Ukrainian F-16 fighter jets reportedly carried out a bold airstrike against a Russian helicopter base near Taganrog in Russia's Rostov region.
Flying at very low altitude to avoid radar detection, the aircraft allegedly struck helicopters parked on the airfield, destroying at least four, including Ka-52 attack helicopter models.
The base, which had reportedly been used to support assaults on Ukrainian positions, was left engulfed in flames, with multiple secondary explosions reported across the site.
If confirmed, the operation would mark the first deep manned strike inside Russian territory using Western-supplied fighter aircraft.
👇 Will Russia move more of its aviation assets farther from the front line after this raid?
Among the remarkable people from around the world who came to Ukraine in the first months of Russia’s full-scale invasion to defend the country with weapons in their hands as part of the International Legion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was Ben Grant, the son of British Conservative MP Helen Grant. A former UK Sports Minister and adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2022, Helen Grant later learned of her son's decision only after he had already arrived in Ukraine.
A 30-year-old former Royal Marine and Afghanistan veteran, Ben Grant traveled to Ukraine on March 10, 2022, shortly after the full-scale invasion began. He did so secretly, without informing his mother in advance.
In May 2022, Ben Grant and his comrades rescued fellow British volunteer Dean Arthur, who had been seriously wounded during a Ukrainian counteroffensive north of Kharkiv. Thanks to their quick actions and the efforts of doctors in Kyiv, Arthur’s leg was saved.
In an interview at the time, Dean Arthur said that fighting for Ukraine was an honor and described Ukrainians as “a great people,” praising the courage of Ukrainian soldiers.
> “These guys are really fighting. They come into this as underdogs and they win. They do it every day, relentlessly. Not just the soldiers on the front line, but the volunteers, the hospitals, everyone,” he told The Telegraph.
Russian media also wrote about Ben Grant in his role as a commander of a group of foreign volunteers fighting for Ukraine, unsurprisingly portraying him in a negative light.
That likely did little to concern Grant himself. From the beginning, he believed he was fighting on the side of what he saw as justice and freedom. Despite the risks, he was prepared to continue until Ukraine prevailed.
For him, the war was not only about territory—it was about values and human lives. Explaining why he came to Ukraine in March 2022, Grant said he made the decision after watching footage of a Russian strike on a residential building and hearing a child screaming in the background.
> “I’m a father of three children, and if those were my children, I know what I would do—I would go and fight.”
And so he came to fight for Ukraine.
Many Ukrainians remain grateful to him, as they are to all those who have defended Ukraine during the war. 🇺🇦🇬🇧

I'm finally reading Dune. This quote, which is in the first few pages, hits hard:
"Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them."
