Before deciding who to vote for, ask yourself: What kind of community do I want to live in?
Reliable water and electricity? Safer public spaces? Better roads? Cleaner neighbourhoods? A municipality that listens and responds when residents raise concerns?
Start with what matters to you and your community, then consider which candidates and parties have credible plans to achieve it.
Your vote can help shape your community’s future.

Political manifestos can be dense, with lots of information to work through. Start by looking at the issues that matter most to you and your community. Good questions to start with are:
What does a party stand for?
What are its priorities for your community?
What does it propose to do about the issues that matter to you?
Compare the main promises between parties, identify gaps, and look for evidence of what candidates and parties have done before.
An informed vote starts with knowing what matters to you.
To compare parties, you can look for their official manifestos on their websites or verified social-media pages. Start with their plans for water, sanitation, electricity, housing, safety and local roads.

Water, sanitation, electricity and waste collection are not gifts that politicians hand out in exchange for your vote. Municipalities have responsibilities to deliver these services within their mandates.
If these services are inadequate or missing in your community, ask candidates how they will improve them: what they will do, how they will do it, and how you can hold them accountable.
Your rights are not campaign rewards.

Your social grant is not a favour from a politician.
Social grants are governed by law. Your eligibility is not determined by whether you vote for a particular political party. No politician should make you feel that you must vote a certain way to keep a grant you qualify for.
Know your rights. Make your own choice.
If someone says your grant is linked to your vote, you can write down who said it, what they said, and when and where and report it to the @IECSouthAfrica or the police.

Your vote is your choice. As South Africa prepares for the local government elections, you will hear promises about jobs, housing, water, electricity and other services.
Listen. Ask questions. Consider your options.
But remember: your vote belongs to you. Make your choice based on what you believe is best for your community.

On 7 October 2026, Black Sash, the Stellenbosch University Law Clinic, and Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr co-hosted a one-day training session focused on constitutional rights, access to basic services, local government accountability, and the link between service delivery failures and gender-based violence (GBV).
The training explored how access to water, sanitation, housing, healthcare, and safe public spaces is not only a service delivery issue, but also a matter of dignity, equality, safety, and the realisation of constitutional rights.
