BREAKING: I just did a wide ranging interview with Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos about a lot of topics. Here are some highlights.
Nanos tells FOX that his office did NOT find a glove at Nancy’s home. “We have no glove. We never found a glove on that property.”
Nanos claims his office has been using the same contracted private lab for decades, long before he was in office. He says his office started sending the Guthrie evidence to this lab from the start and that the GUTHRIE FAMILY DNA and OTHER DNA SWABS are there too — so it makes sense to keep sending the incoming evidence there so that the lab can immediately run the new evidence against what is already in house. Nanos claims the FBI was on board with this. He says why split evidence between the private lab and Quantico. “We trust the FBI’s crime lab, we’ve used them before, but in this case we started with that lab. It’s just that simple.”
Nanos claims he is working together WELL WITH THE FBI, claims he would have NO REASON not to seek their help and partnership. “Absolutely crazy,” that he wouldn’t use their partnerships.
Nanos claims he called the FBI the next working day, the Monday after Nancy went missing. He shoots down claims he was reluctant to include the FBI and says for example they quickly let the FBI take the lead on the ransom notes because the FBI is better at that with their technology.
On the ransom notes and their legitimacy, he says the FBI is the expert on that. He can’t comment.
On whether this is a kidnapping or something else — he says “we believe it’s a kidnapping” but you “always consider all possibilities.”
The sheriff said in a local news interview that they found a few different gloves in the area. Some miles away. On this topic, he told Fox that they are not necessarily prioritizing every glove — for example they’re getting calls of gloves in Phoenix a long ways away. (So news of every glove that’s found may not be critical.)
“Nobody is ever really eliminated” when asked if anyone has been ruled out.
Nanos says the Rio Rico, AZ man who was briefly detained the other night is a delivery person who was “in the area” of Nancy’s house. “More than one” issue lead Sheriff to the Rio Rico man. After talking, the Sheriff feels satisfied with his alibi.
Nanos will not confirm to FOX if there was forced entry at Nancy’s house or whether the front or back door was used.
Nanos says Nancy’s blood was found outside her home, and Nancy's DNA was recovered inside but he can’t confirm the DNA inside is blood.
On the criticism that the Sheriff’s office released the Nancy Guthrie crime scene house too soon. Opened it up too quick. Says “it’s not true.” They got what they needed. I asked him if they should have cleaned up the blood out of sanctity and he said it’s not their role. Said it’s a slap on his team to say they left too soon. Also says the DEPUTY CARS out front NOW are at request of the family — for safety — it’s not that the Sheriff signaling they left too soon.
On allegations that family members are involved. “The family has been fully, 100% completely, whatever we asked for they’ve done.” “It was getting crazy out there with allegations about the family.” "You can’t accuse people of a horrific crime like that and not have any facts behind it.’ (But in the same interview he does say no one is really ever ruled out. As of today.)
Nanos has talked to Savanah Guthrie. He says they’ve talked and texted but she doesn’t need to talk to the Sheriff. She has people. “The whole family has my number.”
On reports and previous incidents that suggest Nanos doesn’t have a good relationship with the FBI: “You google what you google. You read what you read. I’ve got no response. I’ve always had a good relationship with the FBI. They’re a good team. They’re good people."
New images in the search for Nancy Guthrie:
Over the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s home that may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors - including the removal of recording devices. The video was recovered from residual data located in backend systems.
Working with our partners - as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie's front door the morning of her disappearance.
