Cooper floored Cassius Clay โ as he was then known โ at the end of the fourth.
Britain held its breath, but Clay recovered and stopped a bloodied Cooper in the fifth.
Errol Spence Jr says his training camp ahead of his fight with Terence Crawford was โa whole messed up situation.โ
Spence, who later became embroiled in a two-way legal dispute with former trainer Derrick James, added that he did no sparring in the build-up to his 2023 undisputed fight with Crawford and felt weak throughout camp.
โMan, that camp was bulls**t,โ Spence told Andre Ward on The Art of Ward. โI did no sparring. The guys didnโt fit. I ainโt had no southpaws in there to spar. None of that. It was all out of whack.
โIn the camp, everything was just out of whack. But for me, I knew this maximum payout is going to take care of my family, even if Iโm not here.
โAnd I didnโt know if I was going to box again. I felt like that before the fight.
"We [he and Derrick James] just worked the mitts. You would think he would put on some gloves and have me blocking shots, but it was none of that.
โ[I was] just feeling weak, depleted. Even if I worked out, I felt like I wasnโt getting stronger. The whole camp, it was just a whole messed up situation.โ
Though Oscar De La Hoyaโs 1999 disappointing and controversial points loss to Felix Trinidad fell below expectation, the โGolden Boyโsโ clash with Shane Mosley #OnThisDay in 2000 exceeded it.
Sixteen years before, as school boys, the two engaged in the first of many amateur rounds they shared. De La Hoya, the pre-fight favourite edged ahead in the first half before Shane, switching stance and utilising his jab and switching stance, took control in the second half. โThe bad memories of the Trinidad fight have been erased, this has been a war,โ Jim Lampley yelled in the last round as De La Hoya took a booming right hand.
Indeed it had, and this time there would be no debate that the right man won as โSugar Shaneโ took the decision.
