Hundreds of neighbours packed the room in Central Lonsdale last night to welcome Prime Minister Mark Carney to North Vancouver–Capilano – and the message from the crowd was unmistakable: this community is ready to build the strongest economy in the G7, ready to stand up for Canada, and ready to get it done.

That’s what’s at stake in this important by-election, and the choice couldn’t be clearer. Together, we’ll keep working to ensure North Vancouver–Capilano has its strongest possible voice in Ottawa, with a real plan to build the North Shore strong.

Thank you to the team at @Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards for the tour today, home to thousands of skilled workers right here on the North Shore. It was great to speak with the tradespeople, engineers, project leaders, and apprentices building the vessels that will supply our Navy and protect our coasts.

Prime Minister @MarkJCarney has been clear: Canada’s security and prosperity will be built at home. On the North Shore, we’re building Canada strong for all.

Tens of thousands cross the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge every day, named for the 19 workers who died when it collapsed mid-construction in 1958.

Today I met with Doug Parton of Ironworkers Local 97 (the union whose members built the bridge) along the Burrard waterfront, with so much of Canada's trade moving through the harbour right behind us.

We talked about building our economy strong in the face of global uncertainty: major projects that get to yes, apprenticeships that become high-paying union careers, and building in solidarity with Canadian workers.

That's the mission of Mark Carney's team, and the work I want to take to the next level for the North Shore. Because a strong B.C. economy will get built one beam, one shift, and one skilled pair of hands at a time.

Saw this extraordinary monument for the first time this year and was spellbound.

Canadians have made such deep and courageous sacrifices for the security and freedom of our people and our Allies, all throughout our history.

90 years ago Canada’s most impressive and meaningful monument was unveiled, at Vimy.

It is more than a memorial to the 3,598 Canadians who died during the Battle of Vimy, (one of whom was my great uncle.)

Given its scale, and the singular importance of Vimy to the epic Canadian role in the Great War, it also stands as a kind of memorial to the more than 66,000 Canadians who died in the conflict.

It is impossible for us to imagine the profound impact their sacrifice had on a Canadian society of only 7.4 million people, with 1.5% of the adult male population dying in the war, and many more coming back maimed for life.

Vimy was not just a site of sacrifice, but of nation building. For the first time the entire Canadian Army fought together, winning an impossibly difficult victory thanks to months of meticulous planning under the brilliant leadership of Major General Arthur Currie.

Many historians have argued that Confederation was the beginning of Canada’s status as an independent state, but Vimy is when our forebears came together with a deep sense of shared nationhood.

The victory was the foundation of Canada’s huge role as the shock troops of the Allies’ 100 Day Offensive that ended the war.

All of that is reflected in the enormous scale and passion of Walter Seymour Allward’s brilliant design, which marries the classical tradition with a modern sensibility, making the entire monument feel timeless.

Every Canadian should make an effort to do their own pilgrimage to Vimy, as thousands did 90 years ago at its opening.

Pride Week has begun on the North Shore, and had a blast being there for flag raisings both in West Van and the City of North Vancouver.

A Pride flag over a city hall is a both a small thing and a seismic one: proof of how far our freedom to love openly and equally has come in our lifetimes, a reminder of everywhere it still hasn’t, and a reminder of every right that still needs protecting.

We celebrate, and we keep securing new progress.

The attack at the Christopher Street Day festival in Berlin is horrific. No one should face hatred or violence because of who they are or who they love.
