#WATCH: Five judges are set to be elevated to the Supreme Court of India. Two among them have superseded judges senior to them. One such judge is Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, G.S. Sandhawalia—an honest, upright judge of unimpeachable integrity. No one pushed for his, or Justice Atul Sreedharan’s elevation within the Collegium.
The CONSISTENT failure to bring fiercely independent and upright judges to the country’s highest constitutional court is becoming one of the GRAVEST failures of the Collegium. Equally troubling, if not more, is the complete SILENCE of the political opposition on these questions. One cannot remain indifferent during appointments and then suddenly discover outrage only after controversial judgments like SIR are delivered.
The judicial institution has been weakened not overnight but through steady erosion. Silence, compromise, opacity, selective courage, and the complete normalisation of mediocrity over brilliance and integrity.
Unfortunately, if this trajectory continues unchecked for a few more years, there will eventually come a point where large sections of people begin LOSING all faith in the very legitimacy of this system itself. And it already appears to have begun.
Courts survive because people continue to believe that justice, fairness, and constitutional morality still meaningfully reside within them. The day that belief collapses—complete chaos. It is something all of us need to think urgently about before it becomes too late.

I did not to go to the Supreme Court today to hear its order in the SIR case.
As a litigant in this case, and as someone who was given the honour of addressing the court, I should have been hopeful, anxious, or at least curious. I was not. The case was decided long ago. We were only waiting for the transcript and its fine print.
The course of this case was settled in August last year. Having heard arguments against SIR for three days, the court moved away from examining the constitutionality of SIR and effectively converted itself into a Consumer Forum, focused on grievance redressal and arbitration, rather than constitutional principles.
The case was effectively decided when the apex court allowed the ECI to rush through the Bihar elections without first deciding the matter, and without requiring the ECI to rectify even the most glaring defects in post-SIR rolls.
There was little left of this case once the ECI proceeded with the second and then the third phase of SIR, while the Hon’ble Court leisurely heard arguments about its constitutionality. SIR had become a fait accompli. Any remaining doubt disappeared when the Hon’ble judges observed in open court that no one would be allowed to obstruct SIR.
The final nail in the coffin of this petition was hammered during the hearing of another petition before the same Bench, when an Hon’ble judge remarked that millions denied their right to vote need not fret, since they could vote in the next election. At that moment, the court abdicated its constitutional responsibility.
Shorn of legalese, the simple truth is that the highest court of a constitutional democracy has already authorised the disenfranchisement of millions of citizens — at least 59 million so far, could go up eventually to 100 million.
It was inconceivable that the court would now declare SIR unconstitutional and annul all post-SIR elections. The lawyers were waiting for the the exact legal reasoning deployed to arrive at a conclusion that was already known. Such legal gymnastics did not interest me. Some friends were looking for some crumbs in the hope that the court might at least wish to save face, if not save the voters. Eventually that too did not happen. Polite noises apart, the Court has handed over a carteblac to the ECI to do what it pleases with the voters list.
ADR vs Union of India (2026) is to our times what ADM Jabalpur vs Shivkant
Shukla (1976) was to the previous assault on our democracy. We must hope that the SIR judgment does not mark the crumbling of the last constitutional wall, as ADM Jabalpur once did. We must believe that one day this constitutional abdication by the guardian of the Constitution will be recognised for what it was. And reversed.
Jai Hind!
This is India's ‘FREE PRESS’ !
He's an anchor on Doordarshan, a central government TV channel. He's always spewing venom. When a child questioned the flaws in the CBSE exam testing, this national channel anchor @AshokShrivasta6 labeled him a P@kistani child. Imagine the mental trauma the child and his entire family must have suffered!
This is a serious crime. It's online bullying. If it were any other country, he would be in jail for violating child rights. But the @narendramodi government won't take action against this anchor. If they do, we'll let you know.
This is PRESS FREEDOM here… you can FREELY commit any crime while sitting in the government's lap.
Thank you
#READ this distressing column written by widely respected economist Surjit Bhalla. The economy is in GRAVE DANGER!
The BJP may be winning elections, and we are very close to a one-party rule. BUT, as Bhalla here points out, "the deeper danger of overwhelming political success is that it can encourage the belief that policy is already good enough. It is not." He even calls upon us to "dispense with the moniker of the fastest-growing major economy" for reasons he explains here.
To those thinking India can command, eat the humble pie here: "The new mindset believes India can, and should, dictate terms to the foreign investor; that investors are “dying” to enter the “large” Indian market. To put that market in perspective: India’s GDP in 2025 was smaller than that of the state of California."
The alarm bells have been ringing for a while, but the government is failing to course-correct. As a result, it has produced a very fragile economy. Tougher, more dangerous days ahead for the Indian economy!
Madam Chief Minister @gupta_rekha, you won applause from me and other motor car owners when you went to the Supreme Court and won relaxation of the absurd and irrational 15 year retirement rule for petrol motor cars.
https://t.co/MCJrZYcROk
The court agreed that enforcement of a stringent PUC test is what is needed rather than the eco -unfriendly scrapping of cars that have plenty of serviceable life left in them and the consequent (and often unaffordable) purchase of a new car.
But more than a year later, your government and RTO have yet to implement this! My Sept 2011 Hindustan Motors Ambassador has its registration up to Sept 2026 and the RTO refuses to re-register it beyond that. “Ji haan, Court ka aadesh to aaya parantu aadarneeya CM Madam ke yahan se koi notification nahin jaari kiya gaya hai”.l, I was told.
Please follow through on your own promise, Madam CM! It is not enough to merely relax the norms on NOCs to enable Dilliwallas to re-register a 15 year old vehicle in another state. We need to be able to re-register these PUC-compliant motor cars — to which we are deeply attached — in Delhi itself. @drpankajbjp
The name of his lordship will be written in black words in history of SCI. In particular, his remark that voters whose names are deleted may “vote in the next election”. Right to vote is not merely a procedural formality but the very foundation of democracy. Democracy murdered 🥲

@urbancompany_UC Your so called experts are unscrupulous and are cheating people. Recently I had to shell out Rs 8000/ when they were supposed to merely service 3 split ACs in the name of gas filling / change of small part etc.
