Our vision is to be a leading and trusted provider of geological data and knowledge to meet the societal need for a sustainable future. 🌎 RTs ≠ endorsement.
Our lives are intrinsically linked with the Earth. Geology is the answer to many of the challenges we face in the UK and globally.
We're proud to share our new video, which outlines BGS's commitment to delivering the crucial data and insights needed for a sustainable future.
Enjoyed visiting the @BritGeoSurvey at the Lyell Centre today. Great to meet staff from across the organisation and hear about the innovative and important work underway. Thanks to everyone who took the time to share their expertise and insights.
If you live in and around the Perth and Kinross area and felt the earthquake last night, you can help BGS scientists by filling in our felt report questionnaire:

#AgendaMinería | Ministra Williams asistió a la firma de un Memorándum entre el @sernageomincl y el Servicio Geológico Británico, @BritGeoSurvey, enfocado en la promoción de investigación científica conjunta en minería, intercambio de conocimiento técnico e información geológica, entre otros temas de interés.
Esta firma es resultado de la gestión que se logró articular entre ambas instituciones, tras la visita de nuestra autoridad minera a Londres, en el marco de la LME Week 2025.

Dr Kathryn Goodenough is a Principal Geologist and International Lead at BGS in Edinburgh, where she has worked since 2001.
Her work focuses around the geology, resources and wider supply chains of critical raw materials that are essential for the energy transition.
The National Geological Repository is the largest collection of geoscience samples from the UK.
Its collections help drive natural resource exploration, support business growth and improve subsurface risk investigations.

Assuming clear skies, there is an increased chance of seeing the aurora tonight and tomorrow, with some sightings already being reported. Those in Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland have the best chance if the weather is favourable.
🚨 Aurora alert! 🚨
A geomagnetic storm is expected over the next 48 hours due to the expected arrival of a coronal mass ejection that left the Sun on 18th January.

A fault line running under Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, has the potential to release a 6.5 magnitude earthquake.
BGS geoscientist Ekbal Hussain and partners spoke with @GeographicalMag about the fault line and what the impact of the quake could be.

Today we hosted @mike_reader MP at our Nottinghamshire HQ.
We showed Mike how BGS receives, delivers & uses ground investigation and borehole data to support decision making and reduce risks in construction and infrastructure development before taking him on a tour of the site.
Seismologists at BGS have published data on the number of seismic events over the past 12 months. With over 300 earthquakes recorded, data shows 2025 was an above average year for earthquakes across the UK.
