It is a divided one. A country set against the continent that carried its freedom. Trust in its own institutions thinned. Standing with its allies spent. None of that returns a single job. None of it fixes a single municipality. That was never what it was built to do.

Look at what the proposals on the table actually deliver. Not work. Not a restored service. They deepen division and they erode trust, and a country short of both is far easier to move than one that holds them. Ask who that serves. The answer is never the person on the ground.

And it is the person on the ground who is handed the matches. Told the fire is theirs. Told the enemy is the trader beside them. Left to burn down their own street, while those who carried in the petrol and the tyres stand well clear of the flame, and are never named.

We will rue this day. Let us not be its author.

BrownSense joined a closed roundtable hosted by the @IDCSouthAfrica and UJ's CCRED on opening up markets for South African businesses through digital platforms, with strong representation from government. Our founder, @MzuzukileSoni, made five contributions.

One, the state must coordinate itself. The Spaza Shop Support Fund shows a pattern across sectors: to qualify, you need compliance papers held by several departments, each on its own clock. The business is ready. The state is not coordinated. The opportunity dies in the gap.

Two, breakthrough businesses need patient capital, not short-horizon money that funds the wrong outcomes.

Three, government must have the political will to back innovation. Most of our entrepreneurs build on foreign tools, so a decision taken in another country can change their access overnight. We must invest in local innovation and the conditions for it to take root.

Four, drive tech and entrepreneurial education from primary level. Not as PR, but with a clear national plan for what this country becomes when we build capability early.

Five, use the institutions that have the pulse. Decisions about market access should draw on those who know what is happening on the ground, not desktop research. BrownSense holds that pulse: 200,000+ businesses, the majority women-led, since 2016.
