Brussels police confirm to the Brussels Times that they were told by the US Embassy to eject two journalists from Sunday's 🇺🇸 "Freedom 250" event.
The journalists say they had asked Ambassador Bill White a question he didn't like. The embassy told the police they had made "threatening behaviour". No such behaviour is visible on the video shared by the journalists, who are simply asking a question.
"At one point, our services were called upon by the protocol unit, which reported threatening behaviour by two individuals towards the ambassador," a police spokesperson told The Brussels Times on Tuesday. "At the request of the embassy’s protocol unit, we escorted them out of the perimeter so that they could leave the site."

🚨 Is Meta’s "pay or ok" model a real choice or just a digital trap? Our @BrusselsGeek reports on the fresh standoff as @beuc and @AgustinReyna slam the new "ad breaks" as a "degraded experience" for users. @Meta claims it is playing by the rules, but the pressure in Brussels is mounting. (1/2)
In all the tragedy happening in the world, there are moments that make me genuinely happy.
An Irish PM defending the British PM from attacks by the US President, and then turning to show solidarity with Ukraine.
This is European solidarity at its finest.
Honor to the Irish 🇮🇪.
In an interview with our @BrusselsGeek, Grégoire Vigroux, a founder of eYou, vows not to follow the @elonmusk model. In an attempt to fight the spread of fake news, the project aims at a "European mindset" of transparency, where AI competes to verify posts rather than pushing controversial content. https://t.co/aP8t2BwaAg
Wow what a night! Thanks to everyone who came to The Owned Continent book launch at Full Circle last night, and a special thanks to @ResPublica_EU for hosting the event!
It was full to the rafters, which I think shows how much appetite there is right now among Europeans to do something about this continent's America addiction.
There were so many good points made on the panel so it's hard to pick just a few, but one stood out to me. Pawel Zerka said that though I lamented in the book that Europeans had not yet woken up to the danger posed by America, he thinks that Europeans are right now waking up - but they're stuck in inertia and not yet ready to get up (out of bed). I agree. Something has changed in the 6 weeks since the book was published and that's the Greenland defence.
@alemannoEU made comparisons between the current awakening and the Italian Risorgimento. Just like 200 years ago Italians did not yet know they were Italian, today Europeans do not yet know they are European. @JamesKanter and I discussed why the white nationalist MAGA movement is so obsessed with Europe (I had several people in the audience tell me afterwards that this was something they hadn't thought of before). And Sophie in 't Veld made the inpassioned point that the intergovernmental model of the EU has failed, and we must reimagine the EU in order to save it.
And of course, @BrusselsGeek proded me on why I'm not being just like all the other Americans telling Europe what to do, and why the ownership of cereals is so personally vexing 😜 And we got a little discussion of the importance of Eurovision in there for good measure.
I know there were so many audience questions we didn't get to, but I'll have plenty of time to take your questions about the book at the Brussels Press Club book reading next week: https://t.co/kc9Pphs4o9
That event will be live streamed on https://t.co/JT6dRVDcfh and you can put your questions in there which I can answer live.
Let's not let people like Mark Rutte tell us we can't dream. Europe deserves to be independent, and we have all the tools we need to do it. The only thing we're missing is a belief in ourselves.
