To prevent dust in the surrounding areas, they used small charges to blast about 100,000 liters (26,000 gallons) into the air as they blasted the 60m (196 foot) chimney.

I brag on the Europeans for a good reason—they know how to build and, in this case, demolish!

What happens when airplanes overshoot runways? Meet engineered material arresting systems, also known as EMAS.
—
These systems appear at both ends of all major runways, and appear seemingly solid to the average eye.
—
However, each is like a cake, with various soft materials like sand, crushable cement, and foam layered together.
—
In an emergency event, the weight of an aircraft will crush the cross-section, slowing it to a safe stop.
—
The more ya know…

If you haven’t checked out @inntelex, give their videos a gander. They’re trying all sorts of stuff. I met some of their guys in Vegas last week. “We love trying different things. Some stuff works, other stuff doesn’t.” Stupid simple, yet most people and companies are afraid to stray from the proven path!

A life experience I’ll never forget… Driving Tibbitt to Contwoyto Winter Road to the Diavik Diamond Mine, the only time all year the operation is accessible by vehicle. It’s a race to move over 200,000 tonnes of fuel and supplies to the various mines before the road melts!

What gets me is they were able to save and reuse the piers.
They drilled holes in the beams and blew hinge points into them, so each span dropped straight down instead of yanking on the columns, and the other side of the highway is still standing right next to it, untouched. 13 spans, about 135 feet each.
Now they reinforce the piers and set a new deck on top.
Somebody did some serious math on this one.

This week, Nitrex, an Italian explosives engineering company, conducted the demolition of 13 spans of the Tevere Viaduct.
—
They designed the demolition to remove the existing deck while protecting the piers, abutments, and other adjacent bridge.
—
Now the bridge can receive a new steel-and-concrete deck equipped with seismic isolation.
—
The main contractor is MGA, which is performing the work on behalf of ANAS.

This is what a few thousand tons per hour fed into a mobile Krupp crusher looks like… D11s push toward the crusher during the day, and 992s feed the hungry monster into the night!!
