Customs Foils Major Hydroponic Weed Smuggling Attempt at IGI Airport; 15.38 Kg Narcotics Concealed Inside Geysers Seized
Based on profiling and specific intelligence, Customs officers at IGI Airport, New Delhi, successfully detected and thwarted an attempt to smuggle a large quantity of narcotic substance into India.
Two passengers arriving from Kuala Lumpur by Flight No. D7-182 on 07.06.2026 were intercepted after crossing the Green Channel. During surveillance and examination, officers observed that the passengers were carrying two brand-new geysers in addition to their checked-in baggage.
During sustained interrogation and scrutiny of the suspects' mobile phone communications, officers developed a strong suspicion regarding the contents of the geysers. The appliances were therefore subjected X-ray examination, which indicated the possibility of concealed material hidden within their internal structure.
Subsequent dismantling of both geysers led to the exposure of a highly sophisticated concealment mechanism. Customs officers recovered 145 vacuum-sealed packets ingeniously concealed inside the appliances. Examination of the recovered packets revealed a green leafy substance suspected to be Hydroponic Weed (Ganja).
The total gross weight of the recovered narcotic substance was found to be 15.38 kilograms. The estimated illicit market value of the seized contraband is approximately ₹5.38 crore.
The recovered narcotic substance has been seized under the provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985, and both passengers have been placed under arrest.
