I just met with local stakeholders—including sheriffs, county judges, and representatives of federal and state elected officials—to discuss border security projects in Big Bend National Park. It was a productive conversation, and I committed to a pause so those conversations can continue. Tomorrow I will be down in the park to compare some of their suggestions to our previous plans.

CBP is pausing all construction activity in Big Bend National Park while I visit and conduct a personal, on-the-ground evaluation.

CBP is firmly committed to protecting America,  and that includes our national treasures like Big Bend National Park (BBNP). We know the current and predictable national security threats and they are real.  Now over the next couple of days, I will join a small team to evaluate the terrain and listen to local leadership, community members and stakeholders to ensure that we secure our borders while simultaneously protecting BBNP for generations to come.

The days of waiting for threats to come to us are over.

On Thursday in El Paso, U.S. and Mexican forces trained together to respond fast and hit threats from both sides of the border. The Juárez Cartel- now designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization has been put on alert. We’re ready.

Although our post-9/11 mission has evolved, our historical responsibilities of collecting tariff revenue, protecting the U.S. economy from smuggling and illegal goods, and processing people and goods at ports of entry continue.

As America marks its 250th anniversary, we're reminded that the story of our nation has always included the men and women who protect it—and that CBP's legacy has been part of that story since 1789.

Yesterday, I joined @CBP and @CBPCommissioner for a fireside chat with CBP’s senior leaders at the Advanced Training Center in Harpers Ferry.

This is where the next generation of CBP leaders is forged—training more than 8,000 students this fiscal year to protect our homeland.
