We did our own research, and here are the top five reasons people gave us for hiding their intention to vote Option 2:

1) Being cancelled by friends, family, coworkers, and neighbours

2) Concern that their employer may find out and uncertainty about the response

3) Fear of damage to their property, including their car or home

4) Anxiety about confrontations, especially among young people

5) “It’s my private choice. It’s no one else’s business.”

In every case, the people we spoke with said they still intend to vote Option 2.

When people are in the privacy of the voting booth and the social pressure is gone, they can vote according to their conscience.

In polling, the broader phenomenon of people concealing a socially sensitive preference is known as social desirability bias. It is related to what is commonly called the “Bradley effect.”
