I appreciate the statement about speaking what you actually feel when you wake up in the middle of the night -- my body does react to that in a perceivable way. Chapter 2 of my novel Shamans: Awakening is now live! Although this is my first novel, writing it feels really natural and kind of like coming home. It could just be because I spent so long reading sci-fi novels growing up. I'm about 15 chapters in now and this is one of the most fun creative things I've done in a while.

This chapter continues the saga of Mark, our hero, in a fairly dystopian, futuristic high school setting. Although Mark, as a skinny, sensitive recluse, is accustomed to being bullied and finding creative ways to avoid being a victim, Mark finds himself spontaneously reacting to an antagonist in a strange new way, with equally surprising results.

I won't post all of the chapters here, so don't worry about your timeline getting cluttered with them, but I wanted to share the new cover art I'm thinking of using as well -- I think it focuses more on the shamans’ abilities, which have to do with empathizing and relating with others, than the other graphic I had in mind, which has more of a generic space-opera flavor.

More than a decade ago, I had the idea to write a novel about children with super-normal empathic abilities. Unlike many sci-fi adventure heroes, they wouldn't use violence to overcome adversity. Instead, using their powers, they would understand and relate to their antagonists in ways their foes had never experienced before. This would transform their antagonists' attitude toward the world and get them to change course.

For the longest time, I couldn't quite get the idea to work, because I was trying to set it in the modern world. The idea was that some covert organization would send the "shamans" to global trouble spots to foster peace by empathizing with people who were in conflict. But I didn't want to be responsible for portraying the existing world super-accurately, and I definitely didn't want the novels to be read as taking stances on 2026-era political issues.

Finally, I realized the solution was to set the books roughly a century into the future, which would let me be a lot more imaginative about the state of the world.
So much of my life when I was growing up was spent reading sci-fi novels, and hopefully I can make a worthwhile contribution to the genre. I'm about 40,000 words in, and I'm thrilled to share the rest with you when it's ready!

Dungeon of Deceit makes its LA premiere at @PasFilmFest on April 9 at 5:40 pm! This is a clip from an intense scene between Lander Eastland and a 1980s text adventure monster played by me in my voice acting debut!

This was such a joy to make despite how compressed the schedule was sometimes - everyone, including our younger actors, was super-professional and motivated and I think you'll see that it shows!

Hope to see you all there! The festival is at the Laemmle Noho, which is down the street from me, so I'll be there for a lot of the event.

@JustineBateman Yes - I don't think in terms of "the entertainment industry" and I just focus on my desire to make a film and what I'll need to do it. Granted, this may be a reason why I am an obscure filmmaker but really I would rather be that than fret over "where the industry is going."
