@docbrownchem When you say AQA won't accept averages, what *are* they expecting? Do they expect the students to identify the individual ox states of the different S atoms, as you do on your website?
@docbrownchem It's +2 and +2.5 isn't it? I tell students that 2.5 is the *average* ox state of the S atoms, they aren't all the same (actually also true of the thiosulphate, it just so happens the average is an integer, so less controversial) which serves the purpose of counting the electrons
@RogersHistory I co-wrote a textbook. Worked so hard to explain concepts with clarity. It went through so much editing. BUT also wrote loads of end-of-chapter questions and had to cut them down by more than half because they wouldn't fit on the assigned two-page spread. Publisher priorities!
@DoctorDemetris @jayforeman Oh, I know. I really like a lot of the Double Fantasy stuff. But I can't bear his manner, somehow, post-Beatles. The pomposity that he punctured so effortlessly back in '64 just kind of became part of his persona. And the gum chewing... Ecch
@Lloyd_Cole I went to the 20th anniversary reunion gig in Manchester. Drove over from Leeds. Fantastic gig. Was in awe of Neil's guitar playing. And now that's 20 years ago itself. Gosh.

@Jo_Moore_Sci In my experience, trust yourself and what helps the kids. We chopped it up to help learning, but also made it explicit how what we taught fits to the spec, so keen kids could make sense of it when pulling it together during revision. Good luck! Happy to offer advice in future.
