Zinedine Zidane is reportedly set to become the next France manager after the 2026 World Cup, with reports indicating he has reached a verbal agreement with the French Football Federation.

The appointment would mark the end of Didier Deschamps' 14-year reign. Since taking charge in 2012, Deschamps has led France to the 2018 World Cup title, the 2022 World Cup final, and the 2021 UEFA Nations League trophy. His final game in charge will be a third-place World Cup playoff against England on Saturday, July 18.

Zidane takes over with a legendary reputation as both a player and a coach. He helped France win the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, scoring twice in the World Cup final against Brazil. He was also named FIFA World Player of the Year three times and won the Ballon d'Or in 1998.

Zidane's final appearance for France came in the 2006 World Cup final against Italy. He gave France the lead with a memorable "Panenka" penalty before being sent off in extra time for headbutting Italy defender Marco Materazzi after a verbal exchange between the two players. With Zidane off the pitch, France went on to lose 5-3 on penalties. He retired from football after the game. It remains one of the most iconic and controversial moments in World Cup history.

Since retiring, Zidane has built an equally remarkable reputation in management. Across two spells with Real Madrid, he became the only manager to ever win three consecutive Champions League titles. He also won a host of other trophies in Spain, becoming one of the most successful coaches of his generation.

Now, nearly 20 years after his final game for France, the man who inspired the country's greatest football triumphs appears set to lead a new generation of Les Bleus.
