Sophia's Story, shared by her mother, Veronica O'Donnell

At just 14 months old, Sophia was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) after developing life threatening
Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA). Her parents, Veronica and Neil, initially mistook her symptoms—Thirst, Energy reduced, Sudden weight change, and Toilet trips (TEST)—for common childhood illnesses. Amid COVID-19 restrictions, Sophia was rushed to hospital, where she received life-saving care. Now thriving, her journey highlights the importance of early T1D diagnosis and advances in diabetes technology. Key findings from the Irish Paediatric Critical Care Audit National Report 2023:

🟦 5% increase in admissions (1,723 total)
🟦 68% were unplanned
🟦 Bed occupancy >85% year-round
🟦148 children admitted to adult ICUs
🟦 97% survival rate
🟦 4 children, aged 5 to 15, donated solid organs, representing 9% of PCCU deaths.
