The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) organized a huge rally today in which thousands of women from across West Bengal marched to the Chief Electoral Officer’s office in Kolkata, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, action against former West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal over the deletion of voters’ names in the state, and immediate restoration of all names deleted from the electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

Despite being stopped by barricades at several locations, a delegation of AIDWA representatives reached the CEO’s office and submitted a memorandum containing their charter of demands. The protest was led by AIDWA General Secretary Kaninika Ghosh, Central Committee member Minakshi Mukherjee, AIDWA West Bengal State President Jahanara Khan and State Secretary Comrade Monalisa Sinha.

Delhi Police cracked down on a peaceful SFI-DYFI protest march to the Election Commission of India office in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, revocation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), and reforms to the Election Commission.

DYFI All India President and Rajya Sabha MP A A Rahim, Rajya Sabha MP V Sivadasan, SFI All India President Adarsh M Saji, and several SFI Delhi leaders and activists were detained during the protest. The police brutally manhandled student and youth activists, including women. SFI and DYFI condemned the police action and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all leaders and activists, strict action against the police personnel responsible for the assault, and an end to the suppression of democratic dissent.

Massive Protests in Koida Mining Belt Against Corporate Control of Odisha’s Mineral Resources

Thousands of mining workers and local tribal residents joined strike action, mass demonstrations, Rail Roko and economic blockade across the Koida mining belt in Odisha on September 24, protesting against the exploitation of workers and local communities and opposing the MMDR Amendment Act, 2026.

Led by CPI(M), CITU and the United Mines Mazdoor Union, workers organised economic blockades at the SAIL mine areas and railway sidings of Kalta, Taldihi, Barsua, Roxy, Patasahi, Bimlagarh and Rangra. Massive demonstrations and Rail Roko were held at Roxy and Patasahi, while NH-520 at Roxy was also blocked.

The protesters raised demands including work for all, substantial enhancement of minimum wages, decent living conditions, better basic facilities and protection of workers’ rights. They also opposed the MMDR Amendment Act, 2026, warning against the growing drive towards corporate control of Odisha’s mineral resources. CPI(M) State Secretariat member Pramod Kumar Samal, Bonai MLA Lakshman Munda, and CITU leader Pravat Kumar Panda were among those who addressed the protest gatherings.

An intensive door to door campaign is underway in Rejinagar Assembly Constituency in West Bengal seeking support for Left Front-nominated CPI(M) candidate Saeed Asad Ali in the by-election scheduled for 6 October.

Polit Bureau Member and West Bengal State Secretary Mohd Salim, Murshidabad District Secretary Zamir Mollah, youth leader Afreen Shilpi and other local leaders and activists joined the campaign trail on 24 September.

I have written to the Hon’ble President seeking urgent constitutional intervention on the disturbing developments concerning the Election Commission and the SIR.

Two of the three Election Commissioners have reportedly objected, at least fourteen times over last ten months, to decisions taken without their approval, alteration of statutory Form 6, centralised control of electoral-roll data, and appeals filed in West Bengal on behalf of the ECI, without their approval, against the inclusion of voters by judicial officers.

With over 13 crore names reportedly struck off draft rolls across 30 States/UTs so far and over 33 lakh Delhi voters issued notices, I have urged that the pending proceedings for removal of the CEC proceed without obstruction, and that the Union Government take a clear stand before the Supreme Court seeking annulment of the SIR wherever it is found unlawful.

The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the SCP Bachao Abhiyaan held a protest demanding the reinstatement of the 70% reservation for Dalit and Adivasi students in four medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh established with support under the Special Component Plan (SCP) and Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) to expand access to medical education for SC/ST students.

SFI and SCP Bachao Abhiyaan have jointly filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Allahabad High Court order striking down the special reservation arrangement under SCP in these institutions in Kannauj, Jalaun, Ambedkar Nagar and Saharanpur. The Uttar Pradesh government had supported the removal of the special reservation status in court, and created uncertainty for SC/ST students in the state.

A massive public meeting was held in Rayagada, Odisha, by the INDIA bloc demanding the repeal of the MMDR Amendment Act, 2026, and protection of Odisha’s rights over its mineral resources. The rally was part of the wider campaign by opposition parties against the legislation, which undermines the rights of the mineral-rich state and threatens the interests of local and tribal communities.

Senior CPI(M) leader Ali Kishore Patnaik and Bonai MLA Laxman Munda, along with other INDIA bloc leaders, addressed the gathering and called for an organised resistance to protect Odisha’s natural resources and the interests of its people. nThe INDIA bloc has demanded the immediate repeal of the MMDR Amendment Act, 2026, and announced that the struggle will be intensified across the state. A major Assembly gherao in Bhubaneswar on September 29 has also been announced as part of the campaign.

The All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) organised conventions in Vikramgad and Wada tehsils of Thane-Palghar district on 22 and 23 September as part of the statewide campaign for the restoration of benefits to nearly one crore women excluded from the Chief Minister’s Ladki Bahin Scheme in Maharashtra. Hundreds of women attended the conventions and resolved to join the Struggle March to Mantralaya in Mumbai.

AIDWA National Vice President Mariam Dhawale, State General Secretary and National Joint Secretary Prachi Hatiwlekar, District President and State Vice President Lahani Dauda, and District Secretary and CEC member Sunita Shingda, and other senior leaders addressed the gatherings.
