A new chapter in Portugal awaits CPP journalism professor Ivana Cvetkovic. 📰

Cvetkovic has received a prestigious Fulbright Scholar Award to Portugal for spring 2027. She is the 46th CPP faculty member to participate in the Fulbright Scholar Exchange since the program began in 1953.

Based at the Escola Superior de Comunicação Social of the Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa, Cvetkovic will expand her research on how journalists cover agriculture and farmer communities, including the role of social media and online news platforms.

Learning through history. 🌎 📚

For Political Science Professor Mary Anne Mendoza, teaching means showing students that history isn't confined to textbooks; it shapes communities, informs global issues, and helps us understand the world we live in.

Mendoza gives students opportunities to put their learning into practice. For example, her work with Barkada (CPP's Filipinx-American student organization) and the Model Organization of American States conference in Washington, D.C., supports students as they develop leadership skills and explore their identities beyond the classroom.

Congrats to CPP biotechnology sophomore KeJuan Jones, who earned the 2026 @calstate Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement and accompanying $20,000 Ali C. Razi Scholarship.

College is now much more affordable for Jones, who is one of four adopted boys his single father is raising. When his grandmother faced health challenges, Jones discovered how his passion for helping others translated to science.

Jones is well on his way to becoming a medical researcher, preparing to help people on an even larger scale. He particularly appreciates the hands-on opportunities at Cal Poly Pomona as he turns his dream into reality.

What does it take to turn a night under the stars into a five-star experience? 🌌

As part of a micro-internship, 23 students from the College of Environmental Design and Collins College of Hospitality Management explored the future of “glamping”, developing new concepts that bring together architecture, design, and guest experience.

Their research has taken them beyond the classroom, including:
🏕️ Hands-on experience building complex glamping tents
🏕️ Attending Glamping Show Americas: Exploring the latest trends and innovations in outdoor hospitality in Colorado.
🏕️ Visiting local resorts: Studying how existing glamping destinations approach design and the guest experience.
🏕️ Staying overnight at Splitrock Farm & Retreat: Experiencing bell tent accommodations firsthand in De Luz Heights.

Bird is the word! 🐓🦆🪿🌹

Our 78th rose float, “Soaring as One,” depicts a vibrant flock of birds soaring together through a colorful sky, celebrating the 2027 @RoseParade theme of “Welcome” by sharing a story of inclusivity, acceptance, and belonging.

The only student-designed and student-built float in the parade, Cal Poly Universities students of all majors will collaborate and innovate until the float makes its grand debut on Colorado Blvd. January 1.

Anticipated challenges include updates to the hydraulic system, concealing a mechanism to raise and lower the 2,000 blimp carrying a peacock and Rhode Island Red chicken, and growing plants and flowers that have never been grown before on each campus.

What can a history degree teach you about winning a lawsuit? Turns out, quite a lot. ⚖️📚

For CPP alum Louie Ruis (‘11, history), the research, evidence analysis, and critical thinking skills he developed in the CPP history department as a student paved the way for his career as an attorney.

Today, Ruiz has two law offices in Ontario and Los Angeles, where he and his firm do pro bono work for Catholic nuns and other clients in need. Additionally, Ruiz is paying it forward to CPP through his active role in the CPP Latin Alumni Association and giving to the Hilda Solis Scholarship Fund to help CPP students achieve their goals.

Hands-on learning at an architecture National Historic Landmark as a CPP student helped Saba Salekfard become what she is today. The CPP architecture professor is the new resident director of the Neutra VDL House.

She has come full circle at the Silver Lake residence designed by renowned architect Richard Neutra and operated under our College of Environmental Design’s stewardship as a center for architecture, art, culture, education and public engagement.

A CPP architecture alumna and current faculty member, Salekfard will utilize the landmark as a living site of experimentation, continuing the legacy of CPP's hands-on learning philosophy that helped launch her career.

What does it mean to leave something behind? For alum Jeffrey McDonnell, it meant helping the next generation build what comes next.

McDonnell (’85, civil engineering) spent three decades building SoCal’s water infrastructure while sharing what he knew with the people around him.

After his unexpected passing in 2023, his friends chose to carry that spirit of generosity back to his alma mater with a $500,000 gift to CPP’s College of Engineering:

🔹$200,000 to establish a permanent scholarship for civil engineering students
🔹$300,000 to create an engineering design bay in McDonnell’s name, giving students space to turn drawings into real-world projects

The students who use that space may never meet McDonnell, but his legacy will be part of their CPP experience, helping them engineer solutions for the future.
